Is this available in ST2?

Yes.

Load the two instruments that you'd like to crossfade between. Go to the "Velocity" page and set the knobs (at least "Amp") to be positive for one instrument and negative for the other. Fine-tune to taste.

Couldn't be easier.

I'm not sure if I misunderstand You or if You misunderstood me (due to very poor explanation on my behalf), but what I'm after is the possibility to crossfade between the velocity layers for one given instrument, i.e. loading a violin sample with 8 different vel. layers and then fade between these as one note is playing, changing the expression dynamically...

And if this is possible in ST2, is it handled when importing samples (i.e. AKAI-samples if they have that kind of programming)?

Ah ok. I'm not sure if ST2 supports crossfading between layers post-note-on. There are also a bunch of reasons to use velocity switching instead of fading, but I'll let Squids come here and explain that one.
