If you were referring to me, yeah I do. I'd hate to go off half-cocked.

Chris,
Why are you starting this kind of thread and taking criticism of it's subject personally?

An absolute classic record that somehow got lost in the shuffle....Manc Chris wrote:I dug out 'Tonic' again recently and still found it to be an uplifting vibrant album, with the sound of real musicians, warts n all, playing great pop songs, all dirtied up on good old 2" analogue tape. (Yes, you can really HEAR it on this record) So, yeah, Bob was/is more than a 'saint' .... he was a F*****G inspiration, and ' tis about time that was recognised.
Cheers Bob!

Sorry Chris, but to my ears they were truly terrible.
I just have to mention The Undertones and then it places the Rats into perspective, doesn't it?

Interesting thread....
What is it about the BTR that still stirs such passionate support???? At a party last year a middle aged accountant (from Dublin) came close to remodelling my face when I expressed the opinion that they were 'shiiiite'. I thought it was some nationalistic thing but obviously not.
Mind you the sainted Bob did give one of my favourite pop star quotes of that era when he said he wanted to 'get rich, get famous and get laid'

munchkin wrote: I'm so glad at least two people have kept their punk credentials. How f**king terrible were BTR? They are in the same category as Toyah, Hazel O'Conner, Howard Jones and Nick Kershaw. Provincial pop dressed up as punk that ranked lower than the very worst 6th form poetry. Any band with a sax in it was hippie shite (except for Pig Bag, The Pop Group and Clock DVA.)
What a load of shite generalisations. Just like the other two people you quote, I suggest your 'punk credentials' are minimal. The Rats never claimed to be a punk band.

Again, you have shot yourself in the foot here. The Undertones were a mighty pop band, one of my fav bands ever in fact, who again, WERE.NOT.PUNK.
Therefore, despite mouthing off like some kind musical oracle, it appears you know F,all about it really and you are coming unstuck at a rate of knots.
Whatever 'history of punk' book you bought ... I'd either demand a refund, or stop looking at the pictures and read the bloody text.

My first band (the Blu Hippos) led off for Husker Du, Black Flag, Fear, the Replacements and the Effigies.
We sucked, don't get me wrong.
But you brought up that 'punk credentials' stuff and I just started typing, helpless to stop myself.
On topic....I just have a different perspective. I have seen so, SO many shitty bands in my life, that whenever I hear people getting all extreme putting down a decent band, I have to chime in. I don't own a single BTR album. My old band mate owned all the records (I paid the rent...shitty deal, now that I think about it). But I just don't understand the hatred. I never really understand it. I personally reserve this sort of indignation for pseudo-musicians like Cher and Madonna.
But we're all different here aren't we?
