Breaking out of another thread, how crap is it when you here people say "Oh THAT band/musician/song?, Well I wouldn't know, it was before my time".

I mean, this is ok for the run of the mill office worker to spout as a reason for ignorance, but musicans? No.

Basically, these people need to go look up the dictionary definition of the word 'record'.

Huh? You expect every musician to be familiar with every music artist throughout all time?

That's what i thought he said, if so, that's just not possible. It might be required by music historians, but musicians, when would they find the time to make music?

i'm with Jeez ....

plus why would i bother spending all that time familiarising myself with old music? unless i wanted to rehash it for some $$ i mean ..(which i dont)

Better yet if the idea is "know evey tiny bit of music out there" who would want to? I mean I am still trying to forget the music my old bands recorded  I was in some bands that put out some serious tripe...but its been recorded...wish I could hunt them all down and burn them

I think it's the phrase Chris was criticising. I.E. "it's from before I was born so why would I possibly want to listen to it?".

Saying that though, I dare say most don't actually mean what the phrase implies. "Before my time" is a commonly used phrase that people will throw around (as with any turn of phrase) without considering its suitability for the purpose. You know that the bunch of words means something when you stick them together, but don't consider the relationships between each word/implications of the phrase as you usually would.

I agree that people should know at least a little bit from evey genra....you should be able to say that you know what classical, jazz, blues, rock, industrial, etc sound like....but I dont think that if its a style of music your not fond of that you should need to know any more than that. If I dont enjoy opera why should I listen to or know the "great" songs of the genra? Now the idea of music being timeless I agree with...but if you only enjoy modern music (and have lisened to other music)than I dont see what the problem with having a limited view of music apreciation is. Not eveyone can like eveything...and Im sure that there are some that arent interested in any music that isnt of say a single modern genra. Personaly I enjoy just about everything...but Im not everyone either...

Yep, as Cron says, its more to do with the phrase.

So much great stuff out there that is doomed never to be heard because it was "before my time". I mean, if that principle applied to visual art then the car boot sales would be choc full of Picasso's and Rembrandts!

I think you have an interesting point but fact remains that a lot of people, in same way they won't watch "alternative" tv or movies, also won't think far outside their exisisting taste boundaries they already have, or even care.

Not an insult i don't tink, just human nature. As a real music lover you probably make more effort than the average, but there will always be people who are happy to consume but not explore or whatever. Some probably know considerably more about art than you, but hey each to their own i guess.

I have to say that i am one of those annoying people who knows a lot of tracks from artists "best of" albums or stuff that gets popular, but then ignorant about the rest of the back catalogue, especially with stuff "before my time":hihi:

With me, i get bugged with people who think lord of the rings was the first thing peter jackson did!! "You ingnoramus, rent out bad taste on DVD right now!! "

Christ alive i shouldn't have had that little joint after wuitting so long. I'll shut up now :hihi:

i used to be like you..

in early 90s i took my 4-track album into a $50 an hour studio to make cd.. half the business in town went there..

dude listened to my stuf since we both used mirages, i had a bit of what's referred to as bach's 'air' synced to the track..

i figured everyone knew this music.. they used to sell cigars with it on the telly for years in the u.k.

dude looks at me and says "are you playing that on the mirage?"

never heard of it before, had no interest in not knowing what "bach's air" was..

i mean.. say you achieve something in your lifetime.. take it to it's logical conclusions.. do you really want to condemn people 50 years from now, okay, say 50,000 years from now that they have to live gray little lives where they are responsible for catalogueing information on everything? "oh no, wigglewump 54 was lord camper snot the fifteenth.."

this is why dogs don't respect people, because the people don't respect the dogs because they don't know who garth brooks is.
