munchkin wrote:(Apologies to Chris in advance. :hihi: ) I was going to quote nuffink until I saw Ian's post. I'm so glad at least two people have kept their punk credentials.
Sorry munchkin, I was never a punk. For the most part, I hated the genuine article as much as bands like BTR.
How f**king terrible were BTR? They are in the same category as Toyah, Hazel O'Conner, Howard Jones and Nick Kershaw. Provincial pop dressed up as punk that ranked lower than the very worst 6th form poetry.
Sums it up nicely imo.
Any band with a sax in it was hippie shite (except for Pig Bag, The Pop Group and Clock DVA.)
I'm a hippie
I just have to mention The Undertones and then it places the Rats into perspective, doesn't it?
On quality of output alone, gotta agree.
RIP Black Tom and Beckett. They weren't just cats, they were MY cats, the best cats ever.

I once met Bob. I had the opportunity to have a sensible conversation with him. Just me and him and a pool table. Unfortunately I was very drunk and all I did was speak so much shit he made a rapid escape. :bang: :smack: :idiot:

On a more serious note, here's how I see it. Those that have been applauding the work of BTR probably feel the way they do as that music featured in part of their teen years. For example, I think The Stones Roses' first album is fantastic, it's probably up in my top 20 albums (maybe not top 10), but is it really really that good? Probably not, it's just I grew up listening to it. Listening to it now brings back memories of being 14/15, drunk on cheap cider or Thunderbird (nice) and going to house parties and trying to pull a girl. Great stuff.

As for comments that the BTR were before my time, well they were. However I listen to loads of stuff that was made pre-1974 - Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Stones, plenty of Motown etc etc.

Having 'Sir-Bob' perform on the Brits or whatever recently, I feel pretty vindicated, I ain't missing much. That's not to dismiss those of you that rate the BTR, I just feel it could be linked to nostalgia.

Anyway, it would be pretty dull if we all liked the same stuff.

Decent point yes, but 'Tonic For The Troops' is a great pop album whatever the era.

Now, for God's sake, lets leave it at that!
