first of all i searched but couldnt find anything.

can anyone post a small guide or a link for sidechaining in fruity loops. i read one and did it a year ago but i dont remember how to do it, it wasnt importand for me b4 . thanx :D

Fruity doesn't natively support sidechaining like logic or Orion. Search for "sidechaining" in the effects or hosts forum and you'll find workarounds which apply to Cubase. A similar method can be applied to fruity loops.

However, you can build a "near sidechaining" effect by using a peak controller to affect the volume slider of a bass track for instance by reacting to the peaks of the bassdrum track.

Post

yea thats what im talking about. with the peak controller. where is the peak controller needed (in the bass channel or kick) and link it where...>??

Post

well basically you put the peak controller on the kick drum channel, and link it to the volume knob of the bass channel, so that they pump in unison.

The thing to remember is that sidechaining is a dynamic effect and using something like Peak Controller will never give you anything like the real McCoy, although it may be adapted to do a reasonable enough job in specific circumstances. Can you use a Peak Controller to actually control the settings on a compressor? That would give you the most satisfactory emulation.

yes, you can use the peak controller to control any parameter on any plugin. I don't know what you mean exactly by "dynamic effect" that makes true sidechaining so different to the peak controller? although i accept that the peak controller isn't the same thing as true sidechaining. the peak controller after all has all kinds of controls that affect the nature of it's reactions to the dynamic signal it is analysing.
this statement is unprovable

I remember whne it first came in, I compared it to the sidechaining in ORION and they were chalk and cheese. The peak controller's effect was clinical but the effect of the sidechained compressor was much more organic. Same with sidechaining the filter in ORION's Sampler compared to using the peak Controller on a filter in FL. Maybe you need to work out some cool equations and use the Peak and Math controllers together to get the right effect.

yes, you could use one instance of peak controller to raise/lower the compressor threshold, the compression ration, and/ or the gain - all at different velocities.
Depending on the parameters of the compressor, you can essentially make it behave just like a real sidechain.

i was just wondering about side chaining myself....

doing it with the peak controller CAN be basically the same thing as doing it with a real side chain compressor, cuz youre basically adding a variable to the compressors action. my issue is that its just not as easy or convenient to do, or to control, as a 'real' one would be.

anyone have any suggestions for a good 'real' one, in plug in form? i love the sonalksis compressor, and i just found out that it has a sorta half-assed side chainer in it, but im lookin for somethin better.

peace.

I think the Waves compressor has sidechaining.

TC Works Native Bundle 3 have sidechaing.
Good realization of "real" sidechaining, but compressor is not so well.

otiumFX COMPADRE beatpuncher (VST/PC) features true stereo sidechaining. It has an external stereo key input to the sidechain so you can route any signal to trigger the compression, as well as pass it trough EQ processing (or whatever effect you wish) before reaching the compressor sidechain. Compadre also features built-in EQ models to do this internally...and it sounds good too ;-)

The Sonalksis compressor is a good compressor, but it is not a sidechain compressor in the sense talked about here. It basicly "just" allows for the pre-filtering of the internal sidechain, which can be fould also on other compressors (such as the Kjaerhus Golden Compressor).

The Waves C1 does allow you to do "real" sidechaining, but only in mono! At least thats the case with the DX/VST versions.

The VST compressors with true stereo sidechaining I would personally consider is these:

otiumFX COMPADRE beatpuncher
Voxengo Crunchessor
Chunkware Vanilla (beta)

EDIT: And I've just seen that Kjaerhus Audio's new product GAC-1 also features a sidechain version. I haven't tried it yet myself though.

Cheers,

well, thanks for all the replies guys. i think i might look at the crunchessor. ive heard good things, but ive never been especially into their stuff when i tried it. perhaps its worth a try. and maybe the waves too....although i dont know what id pay right now JUST for 'real' sidechaining.....

thanks again.

peace.
