I couldn't get through the article. could someone paraphrase for me, and leave out the bullshit parts about Trent being a "virtuoso on practically every instrument"?

His comments/fears/whines about everyone being able to make music and "take engineering and production shortcuts" is pretty funny. Then in the same breath he states he couldnt live with out the same tools that he was just bitching about. Sounds to me that he just likes the exclusivity that hardware brings to the table. He sounds more important saying he used a synth that only 5000 copuies were made 30 years ago than using a software app that nearly anyone can afford and where literally millions of copies can exist...

Yes, the article was written by a rabid groupie who obviously has never seen anyone who can play more than one instrument compentently, but what's up with the Trent bashing? He doesn't sound any different from any other musician who's in the media limelight. I'd like to see how all of your would behave after having sold multi-platinum albums, toured the world, hailed by many as their personal God, and influenced a whole generation of musicians. We have people who doesn't have 1/10 the fame and success of TR and already acting like far worse assholes here at KVR. I couldn't imagine how they'd be if they were in his shoes.

I think it's that personal god bit that sets him up as a popular target. Same reason people bash the most popular software packages (Reason/Fruity/Windows/Cubase/etc). There's always more people against you than with you.

It's all stupid though, he's just another guy making music, all the other bullshit from either side (personal god/pariah) isn't of any use. To participate from either faction is to have bought in to the hype.

But the article is grating. I think it was the "Wow those childhood piano lessons really paid off" line that hurt my brain the most. Still some interesting stuff to be found in it.

I've never been a fan of NIN...I like a few tracks. Still, I think the guy has a certain amount of talent, and I find it a shame that he feels it necessary to bash the technologies that offer a level playing field to aspiring musicians. In all honesty, it sounds less like ego-mania than insecurity. As if he feels he needs to remind the hopefuls that he has access to certain things that can "elevate" him above the average fella with Fruityloops or Reaktor. This smacks of obscurantism and elitism. Everyone I have ever encountered who spoke like that had more gear than confidence, and seemed to be under the impression that the technologies, not the musician, make the music.

Mind you, he isn't exactly alone, taking such a stance. This whole industry relies on propigating false beliefs in our kit. It infects musicians and engineers with the erroneous belief that having this or that tube pre, or this or that vintage analogue wonderbox will somehow transcend composition or arrangement skills. It simply isn't true. Anyone who ever listened to a Tall Dwarfs record knows it, as does anyone who ever listened to the home recorded demos of Reznor's material. The talent will rise to the surface, regardless of the gear.

When you are a one-eyed king, one method of retaining your throne is to blind your constituency. Too bad Trent doesn't seem to understand that it simply isn't required of him. He is an ace arranger and has a great voice. He certainly doesn't need to trash the hopes of the would-be seekers of his crown.

Hey thanks for the link (will read after i post).

I've been a huge fan of nin since the downward spiral was released.. I enjoy that each ablum has a different sound and feel to it.. I've heard their live show is great, but they never come to my town. :(

Anyway.. also.. on nin.com there's a video for the new single, The Hand That Feeds. (in the current work section.. its the blurry blue box a few posts down)

I'm pretty neutral towards Trent et al., but I read the article & think his comments on technology are being mischaracterized. He explicitly says he's glad that so much more gear is available to so many more people today, but he also talks about some of the problems & limitations of having easy access to so much gear. People here talk about the same thing all the time (eg: having a million VSTs vs. having only a few but mastering them).

Okay, he DID sound like a wanker at times ("now I'd like to do a bassline, using the following pedals...") but you can't take too much away from a printed fan piece.

That's precisely why he does it, Scott. Less of him, more of us/them..It somehow dilutes him in some way, which really betrays his insecurities about his own material..

To defend a MUCH earlier post of mine, i was making fun of Trent's studio butt buddy from a strictly computer music stand point. Obviously you dont need a studio and all this hardware. Obviously he relies heavily on computers, and has a lot of hardware cause its a fun little game, and there would be no reason to own some ridiculous studio like his.

If you read the article, you see him loading up battery in logic and doing the drums in that. Now for a man who has endless time and money to devote completly to music, and has all the equipment necessary, why would he not just sit down on the giant screen and do his own damn battery tracks, instead of having some bitch do it for him. That is honestly what I would do. Most people on here have full time jobs working 40-60 hrs a week, and also a lot of people go to school aside from that. WE find the little time neccessary to do this, geez. And it does seem more creative in the long run, to actually sit down and play around with stuff. Everyone is constantly learning new software, and this guy is just gonna miss out on it cause it seems he is too lazy to. Plus he drives an SUV, jesus, SUV.

Why do I call him out of touch? because as he barks away orders, he refers to stuff as "that native instruments vokator thingy" Obviously anyone whoever sat down with a program and used it would not refer to it as that.

That's the whole point. He could have everyone's DREAM here, and spend 10 hours a day on a computer, just for music, haha, but does he take advatage of it? prolly not.
