Courtney Love is an embarrassment to america.

thornemaelstrom wrote:Trent isn't bashing people using Reaktor and Fruity Loops. He goes on in great length about how much he LOVES Reaktor. Also, if you bothered to read the article then you would have seen the part where he commented that back in the day he spent everything he had to buy an Emax, and now anyone can get much better synths for much less money.

I also think that you guys are misrepresenting the bit about more musicians having access to better tools. He was saying that as a result of more people playing, there is more crap out there. This is completely true. Every month I show my non-musician friends some entries for the monthly contests here on KVR and they laugh their asses off at a lot of the entries. Yet, these songs are made with the same softsynths that Trent uses in the studio.

I don't have any pretensions about my own music. It sucks, and most people wouldn't like it. It's very personal and special to me, but that's about it. Most of the stuff I hear on KVR is the same (With a few very noteworthy exceptions) and I think it's important to realize that much like an ugly child, we love our own music anyway no matter how much it horrifies our neighbors.

We listen to music with an ear for things that non-musicians just don't hear. As such, sometimes we end up liking things that others just can't stand. Have you ever had someone make you read their shitty poetry and then say that you really loved it because you were afraid of hurting their feelings? When we show our musician-oriented music to non-musicians I think that it is very much the same. My girlfriend and friends always tell me that they really enjoy my music, but I think that it's more out of politeness than actually liking it.

Trent Reznor doesn't write musician oriented music. He writes music that anyone can enjoy, which can sometimes alienates those of us who write musician oriented music. I think what hurts us the most is that we post our music where only other musicians can hear it, and we come under the impression that you guys like our stuff, so it must be great.

That's not to say that I hate all of the music on KVR. Sickle for instance, I've heard some of your stuff and even though it's not my style, I do enjoy some of the textures, and I think you have a real talent for getting great synth sounds out of Reaktor. There are many similar comments I can make about many of you guys (And gals), but that isn't what the non-music-making public is looking for in a song. They are usually looking for catchy rhythms, hooks, and a certain theatrical element to the presentation.

I'm sure I'm going to get the living shit flamed out of me for that, but I think it's true. Flame all you want, but remember that I don't think I'm better than any of you. On KVR we all suck equally. :D
Brilliant post. I think you really hit the nail on the head. I think that Trent has moved into a different way of working then any of us can even fathom because he CAN. He HAS the resources to work however he wants and what makes HIM creative, not the way WE think it should be done. He has already done it. He's been the sole person working on his demo's, etc. Its not like he was some rich guy that walked up and said "I have all this money and I want to pay all of you people to make me look awesome".

He works this way because he is now able to. Who knows, if we had the same success, we might do it exactly the same way....or compeletely different  . THAT is what makes creativity the individualistic entity that it is...its unique for everyone.

Hard to bash someone's methods when the results are working.

This is a shitty thing to say. She may be obnoxious, and that one documentary paints her as the second coming of Lucifer, but then I read this:

And I saw her in a bit of a different light. Just some perspective :)

Maybe one day you'll be able to yell at some peon and say "no I said Reznor's head on COURTNEY's body, not the other way around you imbecile! I can't be creative with these friggin idiots screwing up my orders! Just use that photoshop thingy or something!"

Everybody starts somewhere.

I'd rather be lobotomized.

That's precisely why he does it, Scott. Less of him, more of us/them..It somehow dilutes him in some way, which really betrays his insecurities about his own material..

I'm glad I told him to f**k off when I met him despite loving his early stuff.
See someone else who loved his early stuff ....
Seriously how many of you new who Trent Reznor was before "The Downward Spiral" ?
Pre TDS material is just far superior on an artistic level - some true gems in there is all I'll say ...

"You make this all go away ,I just wan't something I can never have"

And a prime example of the opposite is ex DepecheModer Alan Wilde who has done some corker work under Recoil moniker - tracks like Luscious Apparatus etc are simply amazing.

The process also worked in reverse. "Trent would sometimes have a very sketchy idea that might not have many instruments on it," Charlie explains. "It might be just drums and bass and a couple of keyboard sounds and a guitar loop or something, and then Danny and I would pile on so much stuff up in our studios that Trent was able to pick through all of our overdubs and find bits and pieces that accentuated the mood that he was trying to get to. So on some of the songs, we were all generating track ideas and swapping them off."-Charlie Clouser

If you want a real article on what it's like in Trent's studio: http://www.9inchnails.net/remix-files/keyboard_mag.htm

Trent has always had a hard time admitting that anyone else contributes to his compositions. Just talk to the people who have quit about how much they contributed, and how little credit they received in return.
