You can find some really nice, affordable "Les Paul"-type guitars here:

It's the same company.
Just upgrade the pickups and switch and you have the same thing.
no actually Epiphone is not made by gibson, they are sold and marketed by gibson but like most imports they are farmed out to different factories. Therefore you could of bought an epiphone this year that's a lot better then the same model 5 years ago or vice-versa. Many of the Asian built guitars (Aria, Ibanez...but inexpensive Ibanez, Crate, Epihone, Yamaha's, Kent, ect) are or have been built in the same factory by the same people. Like anything else they ask for bids and often go with the cheapest.
Personally I do not buy a guitar for it's collector value, but if I did I'd sooner spend a fortune on a '59 Les Paul JR or similar vintage guitar. Hell I could buy a brandnew Gibson Les Paul, get Transperformance and it would still be cheaper and have a whole much more use..

Michael Shenker has had his neck on his black and white flying V replaced many times. It can be fixed. However I am not even close to an SG fan..I say they make great canoe paddles...dgkenney wrote:Hey...I'm crying just hearing about it.Hellbilly wrote:My friend has a few Gibsons and the other day he dropped his 70's Gibson SG before a gig and broke the neck......he fell down and almost cried.I love 70's SG's but the SG's always did have a weak neck...their fatal flaw. Was it cherry red?

Clapton, Page, Townshend and Zappa seemed to make due with them at certain times over the years.hink wrote: I am not even close to an SG fan..I say they make great canoe paddles...I hate the necks on them, but that's just preference. Certainly they are quite popular, just not with me

You are right though, it really is a matter of preference. A guitar's "feel" is so important.

Don't know what the colour is called, but it looks kinda brownish to me.dgkenney wrote:Hey...I'm crying just hearing about it.Hellbilly wrote:My friend has a few Gibsons and the other day he dropped his 70's Gibson SG before a gig and broke the neck......he fell down and almost cried.I love 70's SG's but the SG's always did have a weak neck...their fatal flaw. Here's a pic of him with it...

He also has a Flying V and a Les Paul.

I don't think I'd be in any position to order any new Gibson - and Les Pauls I wouldn't consider owing to their weight.
The Epiphones I've tried out range from pretty good to passable. And just about everyone I've run into have done a number of mods to them to make them better - new bridges, tailpiece, pickups, pots and tuners. That said, I liked the Supernova (Noel Gallagher model) I tried a week ago.
However, I'm excited about what I'm taking delivery of next week - I found a used Peavey Wolfgang Special stop-tail for $599 CDN , with case. Great Paul vibe, MUCH lighter, with a Strat scale so it feels tighter. And a great all-maple neck. And it's bright metallic purple!
Not bad for an American-made Peavey.....

I cringe every time I hear this but a guitar like the Page LP is an investment grade instrument. I guess for people to buy and trade like stock and bonds?
Although if Jimmy Page was going to come over and give you some lessons on his guitar have a brew and share some stories about the special gigs he played it at, I'd at least consider..........
I have an 80's Gibson LP deluxe, and a 70's Epiphone acoustic (made in Japan). I think the Epiphone is a much nicer instrument. But it really is what makes you feel good!

Here's my.... ahem... Gibson.
(Sorry 'bout the crap quality, my cell phone happens to be my only camera)

OK... It's a Vantage, but that's what I love about it! I feel like I'm thumbing my nose at the guitar snobs when I beat this log. Gotta love that!
Total rawk machine!!!!!
When it stays in tune...

IO hear yah but then Wilie Nelson's guitar has a hole in it, I aint putting no holes in my accoustic...I like 2 1/2 out of 4 there...but I am none of them. Though I did go to school a Page school (really I did) and I live on Middlesex street...
fwiw page being the half + clapton and zappa, townsend is a great songwriter but his leads are like fingers on a chaulkboard too me. I have always been more of a stones fan then the who, though when Ron Wood joined I lost interest. Mick Taylor was a big influence on me...
That's why I got my Warmoth Strat (will have another soon) it's my guitar built by me for me. It isn't meant for anyone else to like it, just me. It's a hardtail too for ease with many tunings. The only thing is as an investment it is worthless. Sure it's got all great parts including EMG's but for resale it's worthless, too me it's priceless. If I paid 6k for an ax it would be in a glass box (preferably in a vacuum), I'd rather play it then look at it. Besides if you're into the looks of a guitar a strat imo has much sexier curves....You are right though, it really is a matter of preference. A guitar's "feel" is so important.

Ugh... I hate, loathe, and despise strats. The ugliest f**king piles of machine carved wood ever to be called an guitar.
Also, a very large number of musicians don't play their signature guitars. Yes, they look like their signature models, same paint, same shape, they even have the same headstock. In terms of appearance they are almost identical, but usually they are actually made by independant master guitar builders. The guitarist gets to have their awesome hand-built one-of-a-kind guitar, and the company that endorses them gets to have all the kids think that their guitar hero is playing on a $900 signature model instead of a $7,500 masterpiece.
This has been going on for ages. The moral of the story is that you should never buy a signature model unless it has some added feature that you just can't do without, like a trem. If it's very similar to a less expensive model, go with the less expensive model.

At the risk of being burnt to cinders, I always thought the Telecaster was the ugly one in the family.thornemaelstrom wrote:Ugh... I hate, loathe, and despise strats. The ugliest f**king piles of machine carved wood ever to be called an guitar.
