Hi there. I'm trying out Sonar 4 on a mates pc to see if it is a viable alternative to Logic, and so far everything seems o.k, way more compact and intuitive to Cubase IMHO, but i noticed that my mate has an effects list as long the nile. Is it his vst/dx adaptor to blame or can you not create folders for vsts ?
This is an issue for me as i have an even bigger list of effects categorized via folder, which would make a single menu dropdown list unusable, thus render Sonar inapropriate for mixing.

You can create folders, either by naming the plug-ins in the VST Adapter itself (SONAR will group them according to common prefixes it finds) or using the tool that Whyterabbit has written (SubSONAR).
Or editing the registry manually if you're feeling masochistic.

As kp said, Sonar does, indeed, support folders for effects and instruments.
I have all my instruments and effects neatly organized into folders in Sonar. It's a pretty essential feature, for sure.
You can also download and install the Cakewalk Plugin Manager tool from Cakewalk. It will appear under the Tools menu in Sonar. When you bring it up, it will show you a list of all of your plugins (different lists for instruments and effects). Double-click on any plugin to rename it. Give various plugins the same prefix name and they will be organized in a folder of that common prefix (the next time you start Sonar).
Or use SubSonar (as I do) or the Adapter as mentioned.

The plugin manager is useless for one reason: If you run the VST Adapter, it automatically resets all changes you've made. 
There's no way to save or export your preferences. Same goes for the adapter; rescan the plugin directory, everything's gone, no save or export.
Thankfully subSonar, as mentioned several times, is a good fix.

That doesn't happen on my system. Perhaps you are clicking on the "Reset all" button when you run the VST Adapter?
In any case, SubSonar is very handy.

The VST Adapter (the config tool, not the dll that provides the mapping) is somewhat less than ideal. Personally, I never click the Reset All button - if I need to remove/re-scan a particular plug-in, I'll remove registry entries for it and run the Adapter. Tedious, maybe, but far more reliable.

reset all, then rerunning SubSonar is fine for me; dont really see any problem with it,,,

Because of the quirks mentioned with Cake's (former fxpansion) VST adaptor above, I use directixer http://tonewise.com/DirectiXer/
Its easier to remove and add single plugs. Also, I think the overall performance is much better. I wish Cake would have bought that one.
