... I dug up one of my CDs I did (and didn't do anything with except give to family and "friends") about 4 years ago. After listening to it, it got me contemplating if anyone has done the same thing and been left thinking that although their instrumentation might not have been too hot and there's a certain limitation technology-wise...BUT that their songwriting and ideas were actually better than what they are now?

Hmmm... does anyone share this experience? :?

Nope, every song I've done has been better from both a song-writing and a production standpoint than the previous song. Then again, I've only been doing this a couple of years, and I'm only counting the 4 or 5 songs I've completed.

sounds like you just need to take more chances, and experiment more ;)

There could be some truth in that, or perhaps I just need to "unlearn" a little and try to start out with more of a blank canvas...

hehe.

all my songs are just long bridges, with a chorus thrown in as an afterthought :hihi:

seriously though...

it's funny, as my song-a-day-for-a-month thing really stands out to me still, it's now up on Magnatune as the etherine album "24 days" and it still has moments on it that make me smile. I was alot more experimental then, but I'm getting much more engaged in recording for the various projects in different ways, which is getting some neat results :D

jon - your stuff has always been great to me. You have a great overall ability with melody alongside some great sound selection. I've still got a disc around here with a bunch of your tracks burned, every once in a while I throw it on while I'm playing tony hawk pro skater

At times I would feel down and listen to my old stuff and be inspired. I wasn't progressing. I was down because of my situation. I got a new life, threw away ALL my old recordings (20 yrs worth), and now I write stuff that is much better.

I was certainly more prolific 20 years ago than I am now but I think my song-writing has definitely improved, but not as much as one might hope after so long. If I had to pick the 20 best songs I've written, half of them would be from the first 5 years of proper song-writing, the other half coming from the last 17 years. If I had to pick the best five, they would all be from the NOVAkILL era.
NOVAkILL : Legion GO, AMD Z1x, 16GB RAM, Win11 | Audient EVO 8 | Lumi Keys | Studio Pro 8
Korg Odyssey, bx-oberhausen, Proxima, PolyMax, GR8, JP6K, Union, Atomika,
Invader 2, Flow Motion, Olga, TRK 01, Thorn, Spire, VG Iron

Well, maybe there's some truth in all those "limitation forces creativity" statements.
For me it seems to be like that, at least partially. Some of my older ideas, even those using tape-to-tape recordings, along with guitars tuned as low as possible to get a somewhat bass-ish sounding thing, are still sounding pretty cool to me after all those years - while I'm allways rather unhappy with what I'm coming up these days.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Far to flambouyant for me, just one note rolling along is a good as it gets here :hihi:

songwriting seems to have got worse, but my production is way better nowadays.

it was all progressing nicely here until i started thinking about singing ...

I do think "limitation forces creativity" has truth to it.

I had to with a Roland W-30 and an Emax when i first started and i made some really cool stuff with it.

And now, as i have all this great equipment with awesome sound, i find myself more often just play the VST's and think, this is cool stuff, instead of actually using it to make music.

So, i actually spend more time admiring the equipment then using it to make music.
