It's only slightly out of tune, we swear. I can't find a pitch shifter plugin to at least TRY putting it in tune with the rest of the song. Help!

Break out the wrench and tuning gear. Just don't call a "professional" piano tuner for advice. One got mad at me once and screamed about the piano tuners guild!

Out of tune pianos are much cooler anyway.... :hihi:

sure, and mess the tuning pins up
not to mention, you don't know f**k-all about temperament or setting octaves. It's not as simple as setting up a chromatic tuner. every piano is different
(although it maybe just slightly!)
why not just have it tuned?
or use a sampled piano!

forgot to mention, if you really want to do it yourself, a student tuning kit probably costs around $25
includes the temperament strip and mutes and student tuning hammer.

I just got my piano tuned- there is no way in hell I would attempt it. You have to overshoot by a certain amount to account for the sound board compressing once you get every string tourqued up to tune. The guy that tuned mine had a pretty cool little app that would predict how far to overshoot based on the piano type and how flat / sharp each note was. I had let it go for about a year and a half so it was pretty bad. I even thought that the problem was that I had a shitty piano. However, after a tuning I couldnt believe how good it sounded, and it made me want to practice again.. I am going to budget a tuning 3 times per year, it is sooo worthit...

oh and by the way a pitch shifter would not work, I tried it as well. The problem is that you have 2 and 3 strings per note, and they are all out of tune to a different degree, so you get weird harmonics and partials. It could be cool for effect, but it wont sound "clean"

one of the few comics i remember from a childhood of comics was a strip where Jughead (of the Archie, Veronica, Betty bunch) enters a talent contest after practicing for weeks on his piano.
he plays a few bars, but stops, complaing that it's not fair 'cause the piano's in tune.

not greatly funny, but paints a good mental picture

at my in-laws there's a Kimball upright in the basement that hasn't been tuned since the early 1940's. it's only barely sour on a few notes -- pretty remarkable really, but i imagine if i heard it tuned i'd think otherwise

how much do tunings cost on average? lets say the piano (upright) is completely warped sounding but its just out of tune.. :hihi:

I dunno if yer joking or not, but I paid 104 for my tuning

Well, we ended up doing what I should have done in the first place. I gave up trying to put a "bandaid" on the piano tracks, and we woke up the next morning, and tried a 4th piano that WAS in tune. Lesson learned.
