does anyone know anything about what instruments he used? Synths that is not the obvious orchestra stuff.

I love it to bits! The very first music I ever owned. About twenty years ago I got a personal stereo with War of the Worlds and Shakin' Stevens!

yeah I used to love it too all those years ago, though I couldn't bear to be alone in the room when the lid of the alien ship was slowly unscrewing... that sound really freaked me out. I know it's not considered good taste these days but at least it made possible the hybrid remix of "eve of the war"

Wow, must have bought this back in '78 when it came. Ackording to the booklet the synths used were "Arps, Yamahas, Rolands and Thunderchilds." and later "The Thunderchilds were designed by Nick Broome and Terry Relph-Knight for JWM electronics limited."

Doesn't say to much...

The Same as you guys, I've been listening to it since 20 odd years (if not more) and like Jbravo, I couldn't be lesf alone in a room with that opening bit. It really was amazing, and still is, the synths are fab, the melodies and harmonies too, and great cast too.
One of my favorite "with synths" album. Some really great production work too.

"Farewell To Thunderchild", was this not one of the tracks on there? I still have my parents copy from way back (must get my records out of storage). For me it was a very big influence. What a wonderful work! The lid unscrewing and then falling off is classic.
In my early twenties a buddy and I would have these listening sessions planned (telephones off, lights set accordingly and usually some tabs or shrooms etc..). It never worked out. Without fail somebody (usually these two very normal and nice girls) would pop by half way thru side 2. They wouldnt have understood the drugs and we always had to try and act normal with them, damn. Sorry to be a little off topic. Its just that this one has sooooo many memories attached.

I was real young. Sitting in the garden with headphones on. f**k yeah that lid unscrewing is mad on headphones! But I had no idea what all the sounds were, so being a bit of a space case, I somehow imagined all the sounds were made by various animals! Like whales for squelchy bass synths etc. Wierd kid.

I knew there were other fans of this out there. I've got it on vinyl, cassette, and CD. It was one of my first sample sources when I got my Casio FZ-1 and Akai s900.

I think I bought it more for being a SciFi-fan. I even have the game (didn't like - and never understood why it was called Jeff Waynes when the story is H.G Wells). But the album has its moments and it is kind of special, so I'd say I'm a fan...

Never like his musical version of Spartacus though...

There is a song called "Thunder child" on the album. It's a boat, probably the one fighting the martians on the cover...

im dreading the speilberg version as apparently they are not martians, but from 'another' dimension and the film will (of course, AGAIN) have a strong family theme (GAG - arama !)...he hasnt made a great fantasy film since Jaws or Close Encounters in my opinion..

Main synthesist on that was a guy called Ken Freeman, more famous for writing the theme tune to Casualty (a British hospital drama)his main synths round about that time would have been an Arp2600 and possibly a Yamaha Cs80, he was also synthesist on a lot of early David Essex stuff as well.He was much sought after back in the day for synthetic string textures as he developed his own string machine, rumour has it the famous Polymoog string tone was developed from Kens signature sound, perhaps even by the man himself.
