HELLO...this is my first post on KVR (bestest website) so I'm really excited...(I'm a nerd).Anyway, I'm a fond software production environment newbie and I was wondering if there are any protocols regarding the final recording and the plugins used in in the mix with respect to bit rating . I seem to remember articles or forums that suggested some plugins only having support for say 16 bits where a song recording is in 24 bits....or some crap like that...I was wondering if there's anyone here who can shed any light on the importance (or not) of the distinction betweeen plugins and bit rates...if there is one. CHEERS!

Hello and welcome to KVR!

The specifications for VST and DX plugins require them to use 32bit data. The plugins must accept 32bit data for the input, and the output must be returned as 32bit as well. This is the requirement.

Now, after the plugin has received audio in 32bit format, it can do whatever it wants with it, until it is ready to return it back, which must be 32bit again. Most, if not all, plugins nowdays (and the last few years I believe) work on the data at 32bits throughout, some even go up to 64bits of internal precision. Therefore you do not have to worry at all about numeric precision as far as plugins are concerned.

Hope it helps, and I hope I am right! :D

The bit ranting? That's a great question. I don't feel that developers give enough support to bit ranting. They only seem to pay attention to the big, long, convolved rants that get so technically obtuse, so incomprehensibly complex, so jargonistically twisted and so intellectually costly that most of can't afford to read them, never mind write them. And that is just not fair! Oh, wait...you said 'rating'....Nevermind.

Sorry, I'll just wander back to the Tracktion forum and watch the regularly scheduled rants.
