If you had simply typed "define sf2" into Google's search box you would have immediately found this helpful explanation:

"sf2" refers to the current soundfont format. sf2 files contain all kinds of information about velocity layers and whatnot. To use soundfonts, all you need is sfz and a vst host.

You can get sfz (its free!)
here.

I am sure someone else will eventually come along to tell you about the intricacies of making your own soundfonts and whatnot. In the meantime, have fun!

There are no stupid questions if knowledge is your target.

Soundfonts were introduced by Creative as a way to pack together many .wav files and make them more than multi-samples. The many reincarnations of SBlaster managed well SF2's.

But now, many SW can play Sf2. Halion, Vsampler (just to say something) can import Sf2 into their libraries. SFZ remains the best sfz/sf2 player around - consider such a trasure it's free!

Have a look @ Hammersound and you will find many interesting things.
http://www.soundfonts.it is another site worth mentioning, but power up Google and you'll find a world of Sf2.
