First one for me is from Aphex Twins Ambient Works 85-92 the 11th track Hedphelym, the spooky one with heavy breathing in.
Every time I hear it I wonder how the main screachtype sounds for the main synth parts are done. every so often I have a stab at it and can get close(ish) but not close enough to nail it. I have tried several methods none that get there fully.

Second one is another Aphex Twin track but under the name Polygon Window. On the CD Surfing on Sine Waves the 7th track called either 0.7 or left blank.
It has what sounds like a 303/101(ish) resonant type sound riff being twisted with distortion and compressed and other stuff? this goes most of the way through it and changes slightly throughout. Again I can get a sound thats sort of like it but would not be mistaken for the real thing.

Im not out to do cover versions of them :) but it always niggles abit when I listen to them, in the back of my head Im wondering how its done.

What sounds, from what tracks, niggle you?

"Air" by Albion. Trance track that I have on at least 2 mix discs. Amazing breathing synth sound. (If you're going to tell me it's simple to make, drop a hint, willya?)

Almost any noise Boards of Canada has made. Hard to choose any one in specific but if i must - the track Julie With Candy has this high pitched warbling distorted to hell melody that creeps in every now and then. It doesn't get very loud at any point but it sounds so perfect that its impression is felt. I have an idea of how to do it, but I would never be able to get it just right, and I probably would never have thought to do it unless I had already heard it.

Yeah I like to pass the time occasionally trying to get Boards of Canada type sounds :) always get similar but never the same. Someone should make a Boards of Canada type VSt effect so all your sounds can have that feel :D

I think it's the synths theyre using. They supposedly have tons of vintage synths. I run the sound through tapes and back into my laptop. Play with the pitch, distort it, run fast and random lfos on the volume. Just make the noise sound like its having a hell of a time staying audible.

Boards use CS-60s a lot...man those things are pretty warm. They also run the sounds through analog chorus/delay units and into cheap tape machines or through old preamps and things to degrade the sound.

Where did you get your info about them? I'll just say straight up I'm obsessed with their sound and I want to know everything I possibily can about them.

There's this bit on my next album where the protagonist reveals his instabilities...it's sort of a cuckoo morphing into a warped vinyl recording of a chant heard from inside the fellow's fragmented mind. It sounds like a cuckoo clock falling into a black hole and popping out of the hero's ear, but transforming into a chorus of demented angels along the way. Shouldn't be too hard to make that sound...

Oh, you mean sounds on other people's ablums? :P

Remember Life's Been Good by Joe Walsh?

I'm not so much concerned that I couldn't make the synth sounds from it, but I'll be damned if I can synthesize Joe Walsh.

I have always wanted to get the perfect drum n' bass lead/bass. Everyone says I can nail the sound perfectly, but I can never get the exact perfect sound that i think and dream of.

The only producer I've ever heard get the perfect sound is some douche called Pendulum. His lead are PERFECT, but he puts them into cheap melodies and every other aspect of his tracks are kinda weak. It's a shame to put such good synth work to shame.

Never heard the track, but the breathy sounds in some trance leads comes from A LOT of unison voices. It is basically white noise from so many frequencies at once. If I were you, I would budget room to buy Pro-53, which can nail any trance lead sound right on when in the right hands.

EDIT: Armin Van Buuren's leads tend to be a bit breathy.
