Does using the + or - 3db function in the "audio" option change anything other than the volume of a clip. In other words, as long as it doesn't lead to clipping, does it in any other way distort or change the character of a recorded audio signal?
By way of illustration, I've found that many effects radically change the volume of a clip and have started relying heavily on the 3db function to readjust the volume. This seems to work as intended, I just don't want to be distorting a signal when using said function and am not sure I have the ears for detecting subtle distortion, if any.
Thanks.

So many Sonar questions tonight!
That is exactly all it does. My prefference is not to use it, only because that is all it does, i.e. it brings up the noise as well. For live recordings that may have some hiss I prefer to use the multiband compressor. You can use it without actually compressing, but simply to boost some frequencies, but then you can do the same with a simple sonitus eq as well.
