Did you tweak the settings on it?9b0 wrote:Fast HD, fast CPU, and lot of memory.
Currently i use a 2.1 Dothan laptop with a 7400 RPM HD and it's almost twice as fast as my desktop 1.8 P4.

Right now I'm looking at a Dell Inspiron 1150 2.60 GHz Celeron(R) with 512(easily upgraded) DDR ram and a 30 gig 7400 RPM HD (also easily upgraded).
$800. is the price I'd pay....what do you think?

You should go ahead and buy two of those because Dell's build quality is poor at best in my opinion. Also, don't get a Celeron. They suck for music.

I'm not really talking minimum, more like something that can run a few minimoog V synths without a prob.Ian Stone wrote:Minimally, a Pentium III with 256 megs RAM.
And to be honest, I'll settle for pentium, but prefer AMD.

Mine is an HP Pavillion zv5400; Athlon-based. I went for performance over portability, the screen is just superb and the built-in Harman-Kardon speakers are excellent for composing on the laptop (sucks to be wearing headphones for hours on end).
It can handle everything I've thrown at it so far and cost me less than £700 GBP.

Analogue or digital – which is better? There's only one way to find out... FI-I-IGHT!!!

Pentium mobile 1.6-2.0 ghz. 1gb ram, 40-80gb hard drive 7200 rpm if there is going to be streaming audio. I would look at a manufacturer like IBM, Toshiba, Fujitsu, maybe HP (except they have a huge hard drive failure rate). IBM definitly makes the most well built laptop although it's not flashy. You could also get a notebook built by a white box type company but the level of support is often less than adequate in that kind of situation.

Butter is right. read up on audio benchmarks. A CENTRINO IS THE LAPTOP TO GET. It often beats out a maxed out P4 desktop. Plus you get extended battery life, and the compact size. Seriously, if you dont get a centrino its crazy. .... or possibly an athlon 64 laptop if your looking to do more than audio, such as gaming or video editing.

I have a Toshiba laptop, and it wipes the floor with my old Compaq desktop. The laptop is the same speed as the Compaq (1.5 GHz), but it's a Centrino with 512DDR RAM vs. a P4 with 512 SDRAM.
I haven't tried the Mini Moog V demo with the laptop, but it handles Sytrus pretty well.

just an fyi dell has an $800 off $2000+ laptops at the moment (look at bensbargains.net for the coupon code) so.... 2Ghz centrino + 1gb ram + a full docking station is around $1200 delivered (dell 600m < 5lbs). The drive is slow though so you'll probably want to spend another $100 to replace it with a 7200rpm model. I'm on the fence about getting one myself.
