Anyone out there know Marc Cary's album "Rhodes Ahead"? It's one of those gems that came out in 2000 and was, in my opinion, overlooked by the jazzheads because it's strictly electronic and it's dedicated, as the title so subtely suggests to the Rhodes piano (as well as the minimoog). It's one of those cds which, for the past four years, has regular rotation on my cd player. Don't know if it's still available, but it's really terrific, albeit understated playing.

Please describe it more and provide some links if possible. I love Rhodes piano playing when it's syncopated, slightly funky, and restrained at just the right moments.

In return, I can offer a link to 4 free tracks that will lead you into some of the work by Serge Gainsbourg. There's just something perfect about this stuff and based on what you've described, might appeal to you in a similar way (though not because of the instrumentation).

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 23-4126268[/url]CD Title: Rhodes Ahead

Year: 2000

Record Label: Jazzateria

Musicians: Marc Cary (Rhodes, keys, programming, Mini Moog, Rogue Moog), Tarus Mateen (electric bass), With: Dana Murray (programming), Shariff Simmons (Vocals), Yarbrough Charles Laws (flute, drum programming)

Review: Marc Cary continues to build a name for himself as an innovator, keyboardist, composer and has pulled himself quickly out of sideman status with notables such as Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter and Arthur Taylor, and brought himself to the forefront of the new fusion/acid jazz movement.
Reminiscent of a Headhunters-era Herbie Hancock, the 32-year old Cary fully explores and exploits the many tonal faces of his primary instrument, the Fender Rhodes, and combines mellow yet powerful grooves with searing Moog zooms and strikes against a backdrop of breakbeat style programmed drums. Bassist Tarus Mateen lays down thick bass grooves to fill out the soundscapes that Cary creates with virtually every color of the Rhodes/Moog palette.

Futuristic soundscapes are somewhat unusual for Cary's typical sound and setup; the young keyboardist very often is nostalgic in his use of sounds, grooves and moods, but this is not to understate his trademark ability to spin things into the new millennium while borrowing from classic funk fusion fare.

A change from his recent "Indigenous Peoples (Captured Live In Brazil)" and "Trillium" CDs (which capture Cary in his more familiar groove trio setting) , Rhodes Ahead is an ingenious usage of a virtually limitless spectrum of sounds, but more importantly shows another side of Marc Cary; the experimental side that doesn't mind laying down some incredibly hip breakbeats to compliment the new precedent he has set for electric keyboardists.
