most of us learned by playing along to our Roxy Music albums ....... :scared:
it was rather Genesis&Marillion in my case...
Yes, mine too. :-o  :hihi:

Best bet, make up some chords, and ask some boffin what they are later.

Post

to answer the original question: imo you should try to avoid theory as much as possible - yeah, sure you need a minimal knowledge about chords but apart from this I'd say only learn more when you feel your knowledge is inadequate for your way of working/composing... :-)

Like you Brits would have stood a chance without us yanks.

BTW, have you noticed that almost all of the giants of prog (e.g. Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Queen) were BRITS??????

Do we have some repressed guilt going on here or something??

While not fully grasping the question...

I tend to yank the third out of a chord whenever the melody's hovering around a third. The reason for omitting it is, of course, to eliminate redundance and avoid cluttering when the melody starts hitting the 2's and 4's.

But again, this is completely voluntary, and more depending on the music style than anything else. I only tend to do it on strings, or piano ballads.

Flattened fifths don't seem scary to me; their instability is really really useful..
