Start working with other musicians.....join a band, find a music partner etc etc

start recording live stuff if you arent already. if you cant play anything just go buy some percussion instruments like goat hooves, tamborines etc. you might be surprised at how theyll effect your sound.

Write some songs for your child. Either that are dedicated to her (hard) or are fun to sing with her (fun). It just makes it silly fun again.

My little oppinion, since this is not a "loveme loveme" thread...

Ask youself if you can live without making music, if it's only a hobby or you have born to do that.

some tips to break a creativity gap, if you can't live without music:

1) Take a break, go rest and party.

2) All is music on this world, great ideas are everywhere, open your mind to all kind of krazy thoughts. The more you "fly" (without using too much drugs anyways) the more ideas you'll get at the end.

3) Discipline yourself to give at least one hour to your music creation, take it as a game (a serious game) and you'll surely end with something good to stick doing it.

also, turn on MTV or any major radio station.....hear how shitty that sounds? you KNOW you can do better then that.

I've been in a rut myself. I sit at a Sun workstation all day long, designing microchips for a living. Coming home and hacking away on a computer has lost its' charm over the years. Still, I have an occassional desire to "create". Often, I get an idea on guitar or keyboard, and record it before it gets away. If I come back to it eventually, great! If not, that's ok too. Sometimes you have to let life take you in different directions. For example,I have a new grandchild. I choose to spend a lot of time with him for now. This time is irreplaceable. Your music will always be there when you need to come back to it. :)

It's pretty funny, the fact that today we have MUCH MORE tools to create music, you can now make in your home, any kind of krazy doped music. Call it a sonic nirvana.

But no! one is either waiting for something new, wasting time on forums (this is relative) or just lost on all your funny trippy tools.

Its funny, and happens to me too. The best creative times occured when I didn't had internet connection. I even learned to use "Blender" which had months installed on my HD and I didn't had the "time" to dig a bit inside.

It's funny seeing the responses of a male dominated forum - "here's what I do, you should try..." It's not that I don't appreciate the time taken to try and help me out, but blokes are solution orientated, I do that all the time when the missus comes home and moans about her job.

The thing is I try different styles but I know the music I want to make but just can't seem to. I try but don't know where I go wrong, despite good feedback from you lot.

As for taking a break, well I get less time now than ever - the problem is that I love what I do. It annoys the f**k out of me at the same time but I still love it.

I'm not suggesting that I resent the time lost to it, I think I've just realised that I'm not naturally gifted, I have to work at it and that takes time that I don't have. Inspiration doesn't hit me in 15 mins...

Anyway, ho hum, I'll keep plugging away I guess.

Cheers all.

And Donks - yeah I did thanks.

That pretty well sums up 90% of us, I think!

I'd sure like to do that more. This area is such a wasteland as far as hook ups with other musicians. Either that or everyone is too busy.....
I've heard of Music Concrete...is there Music Asphalt?

Hey cypher...I understand precisely where you are at. For me, nothing feels worse - kinda like constipation of the soul. Or its opposite - where everything that comes out is kinda like horse turds. ALternatively, there is nothing -for me- more exalted than when the muse deigns to come and french kiss me. When those moments pass, everything fades to grey.

I have no suggestions as plenty have been offered already...I've come to realize that these periods of non-creativity are necessary for something that is laying fallow within...something fermenting. For that reason, I try to show up everyday -whether I like it or not - like a jilted swain - hoping that the muse will turn her attentions toward me. If not, I stew/fret etc. and try to work on something else - like an old piece or production or something. It's rare that I'll just stop trying - although that's my own personality - cause I never know when the lightening is gonna strike and I want to be there when it happens.

So, in sum...yeah - it sucks big time -one of the worst feelings I know - but yeah...it'll pass. The creative spirit doesn't die...it may curl into a foetal position or be made to leave home...but it doesn't die.

If you have not any time, but do have money, buy a recorder, of the portable breed, and let someone you respect and trust, go out in nature or the city streets, record a lot of imagetive sound scapes of cars, birds voices, anything, the wind in the willows, who knows what, and when you come home, you can try making music with it as background noises in your sequenser, but be warned, I have not tried this at home, or anywhere, so you would be a pioneer....I think
