Are you a composer or a technoid?

maybe it's a blessing that a dance track only requires about 10% composition (or less) and the rest is production and sound design, which is great fun and does require skill but doesn't require the same kind of creativity and ability of composing an original piece of music - for me anyway. It's easy to get sidetracked with fancy effects, while the 4-bar bassline or melody loops endlessly in the background. I've relied on that in the past, but I think it's an aesthetic that's very 90's and ultimately sounds very derivative so I have been trying hard to compose before getting into the production aspect. I think it's a good exercise to write a track only with plain dry synth sounds because the composition will need to be good to keep it interesting. You can add the fancy production afterwards which will only make the track better (though I find that it's often the production ideas that go on to suggest further compositional development so it's hard to isolate the two)

jens quoth
nonono - you got it wrong - that was not what I meant
Then what did you mean. You specifically agreed with Lunatique's statement, to the point of quoting it. His statement, in purely logical terms, has certain causal assertions in it. You validated those assertions in your agreement. But now you're saying thats not what you mean? So please, you either agree with what you quoted by Lunatique or you did not, which is it?
but I think if someone prioritises the techniocal stuff above the composing itself the danger is given that due to this prioritising he doesn't care enough for the melodies...
Absolute nonsense. This is not some bizzare Aristotelean logic where 'prioritising X' is the opposite of 'caring about Y'.
- that of course has got nothing to do with ability - we've been speaking about priority , right?
Lunatique conflated priority with outcome, so I'm talking about both, and how his conflation, and assertion, are gravely prejudiced. I dont know what you're talking about because you apparantly dont mean what you quote.
What has that to do with capability?
Conflating results with priorities implies that one's capability is reliant on one's priorities. And Lunatique did that, so ask him.
It's a dirty trick there that you try to put something into my mouth I didn't say in the least.
I didnt put anything 'into your mouth'; I iterated some of the logical implications of Lunatique's statement, which you had already agreed with. If you did not agree with them, you should not have agreed with what you quoted. If you can't think through what someone says before agreeing with it, its a 'dirty trick' to blame me for that.
Anyway: think what you want to think about me or my opinion. Look at my signature...
Why? So you can say what you like then scurry away when challenged? Yeah sure, fine, have fun with that.
I'll have to put that in my sig. "If I call jens an arsehole, just ignore it'. Then I can do it whenever I want with no consequences, yeah?
The sun is shining outside and I'm unwilling to spend a single further minute in front of my machine to lead a fruitlessdiscussion with you just because I made the mistake to simply write 'I agree' when I agreed with someone.
Agreed.
You did make that mistake.

Technoid/gearlust .....
I confess to both
Then again as I personally see it I make an effort to compose using technoid tweaking with slow evolutions.

I must admit I do like tweaking and girls,.... and tweaking girls.
Yeah if you haven't tried it you should, they've got little knobs for twisting and using the joystick (this is hard for some to find) I've managed to get to octaves I didn't know existed
and also x-y pad type zones all over their whole bodies .(not to mention the places you can get your fingers into, tactile indeed !!)
In regards to the actual question that was asked here,
tbh I want it all , musician, sound design, techhead which I never thought I'd say but the more I get into technology the more I get out of it. But then I'd have to say each to their own and once your into it for reasons other than blood and evil and world domnation
I couldn't care less .

Composer. I imagine the songs first- hear the melodies, basslines, drums, harmonies and sometimes lyrics in my head before I ever get started with the guitar, keys, or computer.
Then I sit down with an instrument and, in my attempt to translate what's in my head into something others can hear, I proceed to f**k it up.

hehe. I have 'Idea Transforming Stairs (TM)'. I think of or hear a good idea, race up the stairs and it turns out sounding totally different.Cordelia wrote:Composer. My wife never lets me have enough money to be real technoid.
One thing I have developed lately is simple respect for the gear that I do have. I have lost so many things due to neglect over the years.
