see you've lost me there. Do you mean a minor chord relative to the major chord that comprises the bulk of the track. Can you give me a written example? Please.

yes and no. They are an influence and I like their work. Artists I admire most are Lee Coombs, Dylan Rhymes, Meat Katie, Plump DJs(topaz wrote:im guessing chems prodigy play a big part
and then there's Hybrid, but let's not even go there

From what I remember, you don't exactly play an instrument, right?
Well, what about learning one then? For me, that usually is quite an endless source of fresh inspiration.
No need to feel like having to master anything. Just play around.
And even if you didn't ask for it: I like your stuff quite a lot. Nice productions and cool beats. Would be sad to see all that wasted.
Just try to add something new to it to get into some fresh ideas.

There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

what I mean is lots of dance music stays on one level
(I dont believe this is done on purpose more due to lack of knowledge)
simple way to suss the relative minor is simple.
move the whole thing down 3 semitones, so if your in Cmaj move back 3 semitones and you will hit A.
even moving up and down a semi or whole tone every 64 bars or so makes things slightly more interesting.
many see the basic musical theory as muso bollox
then of course use it in their music, not coz they know what is, but coz they copied it from their fav artist'e and they used it.
ps, SF can probably explain it better then me
his engrish is better than mine and he's german.

good point, maybe you're right.opiadream wrote:If you think about quitting,or decide you've quit

you won't look like a 'right tit' if you change your mind later.which kinda makes me wonder about the whole 'not looking for a massage' thing.
the thing is I really don't think my music is that good so I wasn't looking for compliments. I wasn't looking for advice on how to overcome creative block as I'm sure it will pass (even though I did get some good advice from lots of you). I guess what I wanted to know was, where am I going wrong?
Topaz has therefore offered the best advice so far in that respect.
I also realise I should invest more time in learning to program synths to create the sounds I want to hear and it wouldn't hurt to try and learn to play keyboard (so I may check out the cost of lessons) - so look out for a breakbeat version of Little Brown Jug soon
Thanks for all the kind words and advice everyone.

if you do end up a right tit , I want first suck .
(sorry couildn't help myself)
Seriously,
I'll just remind you of something I'm sure you already know.
If you want to be able to handle the highs you must be able to deal with the lows aswell, and every successfull
musician (or the ones I've met at least) know this,
Don't mean to be cheeky, as we are strangers , just thought seen as I was feeling the same recently
untill I realised I actually can't stop.

best way to get over creative block (for me) is to walk away for awhile and not dwell on being 'dry'
I went thru my own 'block' and it seemed to help
when I stopped stressing over not coming up with any ideas I slowly started having them again
sorry I was so blunt before
cranky in the morning
best of luck

.. wow. I've felt like that for years.
I was convinced I was the only one. ;)
I find that music doesn't really .. flow .. like it used to. It might be the change in tools, but I doubt it. i spend the time and learn them (eventually) but .. nothing really happens.
Even when I finish something (on that rare occasion), there's the initial pleased feeling, especially when people praise my work and can back it up (instead of just trying to pat me on the back without actually liking it), it dulls and I end up feeling hollow about it all again.
What would you do if you were to seriously just give music (production) up though? Wouldn't you feel empty, barren? I think I would, so I keep trying to make myself wake up and get stuff done.
