Im glad other people responded to autodidactic asphyxiation or whatever his name was. Saves me from having to.

Guess the dick forgot that there's actually tens of thousands of years of hundreds of cultures to whom melody was far from central to importance in their music. But hey, you know if he's going to say 'oooh look at Bach and Coltrane' then he must be really insightful...
An idiot on Set Theory:

...and to add to rabbyt's comment, that the music of many, if not most, of those cultures had very little, or nothing, to do with individual expression.

But didn't you know, music isn't defined by those people.

Pfft, we bring them civilization, and this the gratitude we get, negation of our deeply held monopolies on belief. Pffft.

I smell a cowbell in my not-too-distant future..

music ('mju:zik), originally pronounced as mmmm you sick? because of the moaning mmmm sounds sick people make. later people started to making sounds like that for entertainment, and the word music denoted that new meaning.

Just took a peak in and so much response in so little time! I know I said I wouldn't post again today but I had to respond to this personal attack.

First of all, who the hell are you to call anybody a dick? You little color-me-badd reject.

Second of all, don't make assumptions on my musical background when you know nothing about me. I have a far broader background then I think you give me credit for. I merely used the classical and jazz figures as points of reference because I knew even little pissant snotty snog-your-own-sister types such as yourself would be familiar with them. If you need more multicultural references, see Pontian music, Byzantine music, and the rest of the 90 percent of music that does use melody you self consumed ape.

Lastly, the intent of my original post was to stress the importance of melody. At no point did I say that not using it is bad or unacceptable. I certainly didn't say that it wasn't music or that it was less valid. So all you touchy little die hards can read the whole post before you get all over my back.

BTW....If I offended anybody with the wallpaper comparison I apologize. I wasn't trying to hurt anybody's feelings. I was just trying to convey the idea of background or backdrop (like a painting with colours and no subject...or perhaps movie music) In all fairness though you should have gotten my meaning when I mentioned adjectives like ambience etc. (Oops, I hope Mr Whyterabbyt understands the multisyllabic words seeing as how my ID gave the illiterate little bastard so much trouble)

To everyone else....Sorry for the harshness of this post. I'm usually much nicer. Then again, I'm usually not called a dick by strangers for having an opinion about music, which in the grand scheme of things is quite trivial. It's not like I took away his livelihood or something.

In summary:
Everyone else.....sorry about any confusion, my last post was written without any malice.

Mr Rabbit..... Go F**k Yourself
