What's a resonator?

See this term used often, sometimes in relation to resonant filters like the MAM RS3 resonator, sometimes in relation to stacked comb filters, like in Ableton Live. And then there's the resonators in Absynth, what are they?
Anyone know what the term usually means, and how does that differ from say 'comb filter'?

It's pretty much anything that, when it's stimulated with a signal near or at a certain frequency, begins to vibrate along. Here, check out wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resonator
They can be strings, hollow tubes or vessels, bars of wood or metal, all kinds things. Or circuits, or emulated circuits. :-)

IOW, it emphasizes/amplifies a band of frequencies around the center freq. Hem.
[edit] If this is all way too elementary and you're asking about generic algorithms that can be adapted to resonance and comb filtering, SORRY! :-D I don't know your level of background, so went for the direct and simple answer.

I like direct and simple, even if it's knowledge I already had, so thank you Meffy.
Was sort of hoping to apply it to specific instances with the audio processing realm rather in general acoustics. Suppose six of one in the long run.
So at least, what's the resonator in Absynth made of?

Hm, not familiar with it. PSP has a free resonator effect, Pianoverb. It emulates twelve strings, each tuned to resonate at a different frequency (typically an octave of TET). Sounds quite nice on cheesy pianos. How they implement it I couldn't guess though, and now I see that's what you meant. Physical modelling? :-) Maybe ask in the dev forum instead of effects?
Also, if you have the Tassman, it's got modules for combs and several kinds of resonators. You could experiment with that 'til the cows come home. (And why not? Looks like lab equipment to me.)

eg. if i say something that resonates with you.. 'reflection given mediu of duration?' :p
you know berimbau, brasilian stick with a bit of wire from a tire strung across it like a bow, gourd tied to it.. chamber on a ukulele..
as such, there is no ~absolute or proprietary process for 'resonator' effects.. a reverb, chorus, delay could be said to be resonator..
oc to differentiate, it might feature some particular function like resonating at configurable frequencies to eg. emulate sympathetic strings on sitar, but anything..
hell i'm typin

you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

cause they not a series of all pass filters..shamann wrote:Right then, so what are they, a series of reverberants (why call them resonator and not reverberant then)?
edit: if they are, they're tuned to operate at certain frequencies only..

A resonator is essentially a feedback loop with a short delay
time, the length of which determines the resonator pitch.
Taken from the Resochord manual.
