Well anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has really seen one of these MIT masterpieces? and is it really as bad as my sarcastic self makes it out to be? Probably not but I'd like to find out.

I can really picture some twat editor over there not knowing what VST is or at least considering it a toy or a joke. But alas, never seen an issue...well back to my armchair and soundfont artical (in a surprisingly turned around EM structure for the better).

Sorry for the ramble but thanks for reading.
The armchair is more than the sum of the bastards

I just got my first issue of EM (the one with the soundfont article). So far, I really like it. I wish it had more stuff on VSTs, but I like that the feel of the mag is more mature than others I've seen in this vein.

It's not that bad at all! You should check out; I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised.

CMJ is a respected academic journal. Some of its content can run a bit on the pretentious side -- but to be fair, you could say that about pretty much any academic journal. Over the years, they've published important basic research into techniques of FM, granular synthesis, additive analysis/resynthesis, waveshaping, and digital filter design (just to mention synthesis techniques).

So a lot of the technology that makes software synthesis work was first documented in this journal, and the editorial board undoubtedly knows what VSTi's are and respects their potential power.

Musical Dice Games are a tradition that goes back to the 18th Century (Mozart and Haydn both wrote sets). They're interesting for historical reasons, at least.

Unlike most scholarly journals in the field of music, CMJ aims for a wider readership outside academia. One consequence is that they regularly review consumer products; hence the review of Cycling '74's Radial.

CMJ isn't an easy read. If you're interested in the tech side of things, and have the math skills to match (you'll generally need them), give it a whirl.
