Well the good thing about having a newbie starting with the presets with GAC-1 is that the manual includes descriptions of the kind of program material they had in mind for any particular preset as well as what you should be listening for. I'd obviously hope that no one's just relying on these untouched for their own work, but they can definately be good starting points. Especially in a plug-in that can be as complex as this with the different routing options. Did I mention I love this BTW? Cause I do ya know.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Going to school on presets is pretty much the easiest way to learn synth or FX programming -- particularly if you have some description or tuturial material to accompany the presets.Funkybot wrote:Well the good thing about having a newbie starting with the presets with GAC-1 is that the manual includes descriptions of the kind of program material they had in mind for any particular preset as well as what you should be listening for.
Same here. Lots of pretty cool tricks in the GAC-1 book that is for sure. I've been trying it on all kinds of material and finding the things it can do with the stereo image of my instrumental recordings a bit of a revelation.I'd obviously hope that no one's just relying on these untouched for their own work, but they can definately be good starting points. Presets for compressors and equalizers are always just made as examples for the user. Especially with a plugin like the GAC-1 I think that presets are useful starting points even for the experienced users as well. There is nothing to be ashamed of by using presets but as funkybot says you got to make the necessary corrections to your own material. But the manual should help you there and in many cases you are only one or two knob adjustments away

I think the best way to use presets is not to take seriously the titles (ie., what they are supposed to be good for/accomplish). But to use them simply to switch between vastly differnt settings as a way to hear different shades of the track and find a good starting point. But often it's not what you'd expect that ends up being the best place to start - eg. "tight vocals" might sound better on your bass than "low end thunder" .. depending on the sonic properties of the material and its interaction with the algs of the plug.platinumears wrote:Nope. The more you rely on presets, the longer it will take you to learn to set up compression yourself.. and that really is the only way to do it properly!HansM wrote:But for mixing newbies like me it really helps a lot to have a strong set of presets.

That's what I have been doing so far, although work pressure kept me from more indepth exploring. Picking one track/instrument and browsing through the presets. And even without further tuning each of these gives a very different character.rSphere wrote:I think the best way to use presets is not to take seriously the titles (ie., what they are supposed to be good for/accomplish). Thanks all for the discussion here about the use of presets so far. It's very informative and useful. And I although I rationally knew for a while that I need to understand (wrong word, should be something like hear, feel) more about the mixing and mastering process, it took some additional 'pressure' to not postpone starting to experiment. And start a learning curve of years....

We will release an update in a few days correcting the way the listen buttons work on the two compressors. Now, you are listening to the side chain channel but in case you use one of the EQ's as a side chain filter it is better to be listening to the actual detector signal on which the compression are based. I think that should be all that needs to be fixed but if anyone should find anything else please mail info@kjaerhusaudio.com so we can fix it in the same update.
Thanks

Happy Anniversary Torben and of your accomplishments within!
I'm taking a close look at GAC-1 today and trying the demo. Even though I can qualify for the double discounts as a Kjaerhus customer I feel a little funny about the price. I suppose it simply reflects the amount of work and thought that has gone into GAC-1 and based on Kjaerhus reputation by definition it must be fair. Also considering the number of actual discreet effects in GAC-1 brings the price per pulgin rate down so thinking of it that way is not so bad. My new lot in life (it's my turn in the poor house boys!) makes me watch my pennies a lot more - I've got a birthday coming up so maybe this will be my present for a while! Actually thinking about all these things this week about GAC-1 and writing it down here is helping my demented mind to justify the purchase...
Torben - Are the dynamics processors that much different sounding than the ones found in your other plugins? I'm going to try the demo out in a minute to hear for myself...I was just wondering if the architecture was basically the same or have you developed some radical new element for GAC-1 compression?
Thanx
...30 minutes later:
Whew (picking jaw up of of desk)!. Well written manual with useful detailed application notes, nice plugin lay out, top notch sounds, excellant intra-plug routing capabilities, nice useful starter presets. This whole release could be a template for how to publish a fine tool. I just listened to a mix I'd been working on last week (that used some creative routing, what a coincidence) and used GAC-1 in there for a very noticeable improvement - tears of joy welling up, hehe
Happy Birthday to me - I just made the purchase (thank you for the discounts!) - License please!

Considering the features and number of effects it's not expensive. Just think of it as buying a bundle of effects, and the routings are a value too. I could think of company’s that would have forced you to sell your house, car or mother in law to be able to buy thiskylen wrote:I'm taking a close look at GAC-1 today and trying the demo. congradulations Torben..Kjaerhus is my go to effect for so many of my tracks..just nice programming. Is GAC-1 stereo demo avalable for down load? I seem to just be able to find the mono version and I would like to try it on my mixed material.
