In case Bones never told you, I try out Orion 5.8 (demo) a few months ago.

And I like the mixer arrangements a lot (especially for using drum synths).

Even now, I putting money aside for Orion. And for my own production, it will co-exist with FL Studio 5 & Audition.

But I want to know what Orion 6 is going to look like first. 8)
So you're saying FL Studio is better than Orion? No way. For one thing, Orion Platinum's drivers are simply better. Better sound, period. Next, Orion has way better synth's than FL Studio. FL Studio has so many cheesy sounds I don't even know where to begin laughing. To me, FL is like an introduction to music making. But if you want a serious VST, invest in Orion.
I SAID: On my computer set-up, Orion will co-exist with FLS & Audition.

Even if (or when) I find myself using Orion more often than FLS (or the other way around), I'm still receiving lifetime free updates for FLS anyway. I can never give that up so easily. And beside, FLS's sampler has time-stretching ability now.

BTW, I use Audition for audio editing & mastering.

And remember, all three have Rewire!!!

EDIT: Orion's instruments are better overall. But don't overlook FLS's Sytrus, BooBass, Wasp, and of course their step-sequencing style sampling drum machine.

Minor correction: The one man here is Gol, not JMC, and Image-Line has been in existence since 1994; way before FL came about. They also have, and I quote "Business solutions, Entertainment and Internet Technology" products.
Wow. That's new information for me. Where the article? I must read the whole story for myself.

And who's Gol? And is he still on the FL team? 8)

as an Orion user , I'm still trying to master it ,when the upgrade comes, I probably won't even be ready for it.

Well, there's no story about it, it's just.. fact. See http://www.image-line.com for a list of people. (Gol = Didier Dambrin)

BONES wrote:Pig's arse! FL never even supported VSTi until version 3.0. OTOH, ORION has since v1.0. Both are pattern-based, the main diffference is one was conceived to be what it is today, the other has evolved from something much simpler by bolting on new functionality without regard for workflow or intuitiveness.
Actually, it was v2:

2.0.1 (21/11/99)

Problem with background wallpaper covering some windows fixed.

Also redraws smoother.

Crash with default skin in palettized mode fixed.

Scrollbars can be moved another way (right click).

Support for middle mouse button (to reset wheels & scroll windows).

Added FLP file format description (beta).

Added plugin editors in view menu.

Added 'arrange windows' in view menu.

Removed the 'auto arrange windows' option in settings.

Removed 'insert pattern in playlist' (not useful).

Internal sync has changed a lot & visuals are smoother.

Can now drop sound files on the playlist (very quick for effects on a song).

No more flicker on some controls.

Basic MIDI input added (see ReadMe.doc).

Added record button, mainly for keyboard input for now.

Autoscroll patterns when playing.

Added new tips, read them!

Can now move channels up/down.

Main reso filter now applied after the master plugins (better).

Can now render to 32Bit float wavs (for use in CoolEdit Pro).

Song settings separated from environment settings (more logical).

Right click a FX track button to pop up the list of plugins.

New default basic drumkit (Club basic).

No more pattern & playlist clipboards filled at the same

time to avoid mistakes.

Added 'captionnizing' to event editor.

Now supports DirectX plugins (crashes to be expected:).

Added 'Twice slower' in the tempo menu, for easier recordings.

Added pan wheels to the main window.

Scans VST plugs in both user & Fruity directories.

TS404 LFO now adjusted correctly when changing song position.

Added balance custom plugin.

Added FruityPro /Reset to make a config reset in case you're in trouble.

Put the check for another instance back (this time only when there's

a command line param) (hope crashes won't be reported this time).

Added 'Open with FruityLoops' in popup menu associated with FLP files.

Fixed small bug in my use of the TS404.

TS404 rewritten internally, using floats, no more clipping & more

stable filter. Even slightly faster. User shape is back.

Adjusted range of the filter in the TS404.

Adjusted the range of all the reso filters.

Rearranged main sliders.

Fixed glitch in cubic interpolation.

Skins now in /Skins subdir. No need to move your old ones,

they're not compatible anyway.

Main, channel & delay line pan/volume tweakings interpolated to avoid pops.

Channel volume can now be tweaked on the fly (needed for the live recording).

MIDI remote controlling of most controls!

Removed 'ahead duration' mixer setting & added polling & hardware

buffer settings for down to a 5ms latency on a SB Live!

Finished new playlist look! (still same features for now)

edit: nevermind the above.. just strike a line through it.. I forgot I was at kvr.. home of the 'stand in defence of your favorite software program because its sooo much better than the other person's program' neverending debate..

I've never understood what's so difficult about the FL workflow. I own OPlat, but have had the FL Studio 5 demo lurking on my laptop for a couple of months now.

Truth be told, I find the FL workflow superior to Orion in many ways. I'd say Orion has slightly better synths than FL with the Orion Sampler, Drumrack and WaspXT. Still, FL is getting there with its excellent slicer, WaveTraveller and the new drummachine. I have a couple of trusted VSTis for most synth stuff anyway.

I love that you can choose which of the internal generators and VSTs you see in FL. There are some generators I never use in Orion, and I'd like to hide them from the menu to avoid clutter.

The weirdest thing about FL is the way it handles patterns. It's no problem once you get your head around it though.
