Virtual Amps for mixing

I have recently been experimenting with using virtual amps, or physical modelled amps, such as Amplitube and Rock Amp Legends as an effect for synths and keyboards (even drums) when mixing and have been happy with the results. It can help rid the homogeneous sound I tend to hear with mixing results in FL Studio.
Anyone do something similar or wants to share an idea, please do.
Vintage Warmer is also great at making the mix sound alive.
Here is a snippet of a mix I did, any suggestions
appreciated.

Not a suggestion but I also use almost constantly JCM900's chanel A with medium to max drive on acoustic drum tracks or loops. I also tried it with MrRAy and LazySnake (rhodes pianos) but was not very happy with the results. Someday when I have the time I 'll try using my tube guitar amp for reamping VSTi stuff.

That's exactly what I'm trying to emulate with my modelling amps. That JCM900 would come in handy, if you ever want to donate to a good cause.zeoy wrote: I also use almost constantly JCM900's chanel A with medium to max drive on acoustic drum tracks or loops.

Don't know if I was clear but I meant the Guitar suite (virtual) JCM900. However my real amp is a more than decent IMHO peavey Bravo (3X12AX7 2XEL84) wich I hope to use in the near future for reamping.

I gotch you, I'll have to check that guitar suite out sometime.zeoy wrote:Don't know if I was clear but I meant the Guitar suite (virtual) JCM900. However my real amp is a more than decent IMHO peavey Bravo (3X12AX7 2XEL84) wich I hope to use in the near future for reamping.
I've owned many of Peavey amps in my day and they all performed nicely.

I've often used Amplitube on loops to get that lo-fi squashed hi-hat effect - love it.

I gave up on using any of the VST amps at this point as I tried all the demos and the freeware ones out now and they just sound terrible IMO (on guitar first and foremost, but if it sounds bad on guitar can't be better anywhere else). Now when I reamp I'm actually running a signal through my Guitarport back into my sequencer. It's a bit tricky and easy to create feedback loops, but the end results in terms of quality of sound over the VST amp sims makes it worth the added pain in the ass. Eventually I'll buy a reamp box and just start doing this out of my Fender Twin. Unless of course Line6 steps up to the plate with some kind of VST amp modeller. The difference really is huge IMO.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

I really like using a tiny amount of overdrive individually on kick drum and toms. I am fortunate enough to be able to use Line 6 Amp Farm in Pro-Tools, but i wouldn't hesitate to try it anywhere else with another plug-in.
The effect i am going for is a fake tape saturation type thing, not obviously distorted.

How is it people can use amp simulators (Amplitube, guitar legends, green amp etc) on drums, bassdrums in particular, and not have the sound lofied or as if a bandpass filter has been applied? I notice with other distortions of a different nature (Cyanide 2, Bloodoverdrive, distortionator, etc) the drums are clear and useable..on the same lines of clarity in the signal, while working with acid lines, the bottom end of the riff (with amp sims applied) sound beautiful but as soon as I raise the resonance in any way, shape, or form the sound quicly degrades and is useless, but with the latter distortions above (C2 Bloodoverdrive) the resonance can scream mercilessly with no degrading. I have used real amps with synths before and have accomplished a clean signal through high resonance but with software its always blemished, whats the problem?
Cheers

I'm liking your demo - good writing, with a very spacious sound and nice imaging in my PC headphones.
Am I to understand that the drums and keyboard sounds have been run through a "clean" amp sim? If so, the use is very transparent which I'm sure is the point.
Also, just curious - is there some ReFx Slayer on that track?

That's probably the cabinet simulator. The speakers in guitar amps typically cut out a lot of highs. The frequency response is far from flat!ThunderDrums wrote:How is it people can use amp simulators (Amplitube, guitar legends, green amp etc) on drums, bassdrums in particular, and not have the sound lofied or as if a bandpass filter has been applied?
Anyway, Amplitube has a "no speaker" setting that's handy if you want your top end back. I imagine most of the other "big name" ampsims have a similar feature.
Forever,
Kim.

Yes there are two instances of Slayer, FM7, V-Station and Absynth 2 and the amplitube was used in the mix at an extremely low level to warm it up.EnzymeX wrote: Also, just curious - is there some ReFx Slayer on that track?
I appreciate the positive comments. Good Karma is heading your way
