Hey kids,

Sorry for bringing this up again as i know it is a fairly minority interest around here.

Basically i think i found a decent little digital DJing package called DSS DJ which can be found here http://www.myxoft.com/

Its very good for the money at 47 euro, easy and stable and it supports MIDI controllers etc which is great. Basically i'd love some of you guys to suggest alternatives so i can make a fully informed decision before i part with my cash.

I already own traktor DJ (the cheap version) and its good but no controller support. Also i tried the demo of traktor studio and it doesn't seem to support multiple soundcards which is just bloody stupid, dual outputs from one card is all fine but i have 2 cards and i can't be the only one!! Shame really cos in every other respect it seems to be the best software for the job despite lacking an FX section (other than a filter). Actually, thinking aout it asio4all v2 might solve this problem, but still traktor studio is quite expensive.

So what other options have i got?

Cheers :D

I am in a similar situation and the app voted as "most likely to get my money" is djDecks. Seems amazing value for money.
It has:
* Extensive controller support, including MIDI, Hercules DJ consle and Final Scratch/ Serato etc.
* 3 Decks
* FX unit
* Timestretching

The developer seems pretty responsive and said he will implement VST support in the future. He is also considering making a VST plugin of the software some day.

The interface is totally skinnable. The default one is pretty ugly, but has a nice feel to it.

Oh yes, one more thing. It's 25 EUR or 30 USD.

EDIT:

the site is HERE. Demo is fully functional, except it shuts down every 30 minutes.

Thanks for the suggestion, i've downloaded the demo and it has some interesting features, although i have issues with stability. I grabbed the spinning disc and scrathed with it for a laugh (something i wouldn't really use to be honest) and the noise was very crackly and then it crashed, big time! Hung the whole computer!!

The FX section is fun but a bit fiddly having to switch between fx pages like that, although the MIDI controller support seems to work and the looping is fairly unique in that when you exit the loop it jumps straight back to record as it would have been playing, in other words it doesn't actually loop the record just play back a sampled loop of a set length. Quite useful in a weird way.

Hmmm might have to keep looking around, this software seems very good value but i'm not convinced its very stable yet.

DSS DJ remains the front runner!!

surely the DSS don't condone djing as a valid form of employment??!
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

man, I've had the most fun you can have while still wearing your pants by using Live for mixing tracks. I just set up my midi controller for the eqs, levels and sends and I'm off to the races. Have to spend some time warping tracks before hand though...

Oh well the joke was still funny haydxn :D

Yeah i did this when i had live 4, which i subsequently sold for cash flow reasons.

I have live delta, and tried to upgrade to the free live 4 "lite" but the previous install seems to be messing with it so i get the full version, which i don't want cos i'm not into piracy!!

Anyhoo its a fantastic DJing tool, probably the best there is, but all that pre-warping tracks is a bit of a pain and need lots of disk space to have every track as a wave file.

I'm looking for MP3 options here, but many thanks for the suggestion mate :)

i dont like traktor i use ssl live made by serato and rane. The sound quality is great but you need real turntables to use it. I along with almost every successful dj out there uses this system. www.serato.com

Easy tiger, bit of a generalisation there perhaps!!

I'm actually very curious about these turntable + timecoded vinyl solutions, but i simply can't afford a set of decks at the moment.

Something i may look into in the future though, nice combo of traditional + digital.

@quincy:

Never had stability issues with djDecks, but haven't tested it that long. I tried scratching it to crash - but no go.

Also note that the interface can be changed completely using skinning, so there might be a user skin available in the forum more suitable for your needs.

In the meantime I downloaded DSS and giving it a spin as I write this :-D

Let me know what you think, and in comparison with djdecks which you clearly had better experience with.

I been thinking about having a play with some of these, not to use live though. Mainly to whip up promotional CDs. Has anyone tried Mixmiester? (My DAW is still limping along after HD crash). More options here than I knew about.

Not interested in things with pseudo vinyl plates, I'm swaying more toward CD now and my scratching days are done, not that I was any good at it!
