Not about a virtual effect, but an effect anyway.. anyone have any tips on how to make a speaker distorted? I bought some old speakers with doing this in mind but I want to know if there are any methods that have already been explored in this area. I was just gonna poke a hole in the things but I don't know if that will have any pleasing effects.

cut some slits in the speaker with a box cutter! one slit at a time until you get the sound that you are looking for.

Yep. Razor blades through speakers.

A 60's garage rock classic. Make sure you crank the treble up all the way too. Your neighbors will hate you.

solder in a small resistor (gets hot!) into the wires so that it's underpowered: clips/distorts like mad, quietly.
..what goes around comes around..

I know a little about soldering. The wires inside the speaker, like the ones actualy beside it, or the wires connecting my stereo to the speaker?

The more a speaker moves, the more it distorts. At low frequencies a speaker has to move a lot to produce the sound pressure level required. Boosting low frequencies will distort a speaker because it has to move so much. If the speaker is in a sealed box, the air in the box will be preventing the speaker from moving to extremes. (as the speaker moves out the air pressure in the box goes down and sucks the speaker back in).

I say take the speaker out of the box and boost the lows like crazy.

The next day, go and buy yourself a new speaker, you may need it. :D

Alternatively buy yourself a small crappy speaker and use that.
