Alright folks....The only one i've ever heard of is the little TBT preamp plugin that he released before he dissapeared due to feeling unappreciated. Now, this may be a moot topic as even most amateur controllers have some kind of preamps in them, but, I think it would be cool to be able to load up a decent quality pre on your insert track and just plug the guitar right into the sound card. So, is this a very possible thing to do? Making a quality Pre-amp in VST format? Is it something worth doing??? Has it already been done and i'm just f**king blind???

A free preamp plug is Tubebooster ST by Green Machine. Lots of amp sims would work for this. Plenty of free ones exist (ex. Tubebaby by Niko).

Well I think the hate comes from the idea that you can't really add what's not there. I bad preamp will sound grainy, not capture much depth, transients, etc, and even some great ones don't work well every mic, or in every situation, not to mention how they react at different gain stages. How can a plug-in add these things? It would take a lot more than EQ, transient shaping, and/or dynamic convolution to do it, as you'd also still need to remove all the character of the original input source, then replace those with the new ones. Preamp modelling could be done at the pre-amp stage (I believe Focusrite's Liquid Channel does this), but not afterwards.
Now this would work in theory, with these new USB mics like BLUE and Neumann have been making as they require no external pre at all (but maybe not as they probably have an internal pre).

I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

no hate from me...but yeah, the idea is a bit ridiculous.
it would be the same thing as trying to reconstruct a clean signal from a distorted one. it just doesn't work. maybe you can fix it a bit with EQ, but it will never be as useable as even the cheapest preamp available.
there are even preamps in a cable now ( http://www.dvforge.com/plug.shtml ).

That wouldn't even make much sense as you need a preamp BEFORE the signal hits the soundcard.
There are 3 kinds of people:

Correct me if I'm wrong, But unless the soundcard has a built-in DI to match the Hi-z impedance of a guitar output, to a low-z line input. there will be an impedance mismatch. Is it audible? (IMO, YES) some will disagree?
Also trying to increase the level after the analog to digital convertor, will introduce more noise into the signal.

hehe, got some emotion going here huh.
You guys are so sensitive. I'm not saying I have a need for it...I have plenty of hardware that I used in my setup...I'm just curious as to whether or not such a thing would at all be possible...maybe in a few years or something...The focusrite liquid Channel is and all the modeling it does is actually what got me thinking about this...I understand how it just couldn't work at the present time...just wondering if it'd be possible in the future.

funkybot, I know the crap, was only having a laugh.
should have used "sarcasm" instead of "hate".
in fact vst-preamps are just a pumping-placebo fx, nice though. I'm usually worried about people using directly pricey stuff like amplitube on their "naked" guitars, simply sucks.
the quality of the process is all up converters, as in focusrite liquid channel. (liquid because it makes me c#m?)

ok, you've made your question, now get out, we've got to argue about serious thingstotc wrote:oh well. fight amongst yourselves

Sorry guys, I picked up on the sarcasm and wasn't pissed off or taking anything personally, just trying to discuss why it's not possible. That's what I get for thinking I was playing along...

(I think it's time to rethink the answer, too)
I retire what I wrote about the site.
