This is my first composition in a collection of works inspired by the 1970's pioneers of electronic music: Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and their like. My aim is not to emulate their works but rather to pay homage to them by incorporating their influences and reflecting it back in a new light.

The melodic theme in this particular piece makes reference to portions of the melodies in Kraftwerk's songs Europe Endless, Franz Schubert, and maybe just a touch of Neon Lights, though the overall mood is more akin to their Ralf & Florian era . . .

And yet at the same time this piece is completely different from all the above.

The instruments used were (in order of appearance):
Pro-53
Albino 2
FM7
Orchestron Violin (actually 3 instances of it from EastWest's ProSamples V.55 Retro Sampler collection in Kontakt; this is the core collection of samples used in their Cult sampler product, but if you have Kontakt or Gigasampler it's less than a quarter the price.)
Oddity
VintAudio's Clean Guitar (I used the Godin Artisan instrument in Kontakt)

I used a variety of different FX including:
Kjaerhus Audio's GPP compressor/limiter, and several of their Classic series
Waves's Renaissance Reverb
DaSample's GlaceVerb

And as a parting nod to this song's inspiration, I threw in an audio sample for good measure--you'll hear what I mean.

Eventually I'll get around to doing a bunch of dark ambient noise work but . . . I've got 30 years of Berlin School influence to get out my system. So, there's more of this style on the way.

pfft..Not sure if that comment has any true merit..compositionally speaking, you're light years beyond what I'm capable of..My stuff might *sound* good, but your stuff *is* good..

Thanks! You know I've been laboring over the mix on this bugger for the last 2 weeks and I'm still not sure it's "there." But it felt presentable.

It's taken me since November to get this one done, even though it's really fairly simple. There's another 6 or 7 songs currently in progress, some of them with a lot more parts to deal with (up to 20 something VSTi in some of them) . . . I dread mixing those!

no, sickle, the word is "abo" - from the ancient ugaritic "abomesh" meaning "inspiration from the Bull-God that dwells on high, higher than the top of the ziggarauts" -

emdot...I hear ya...I got about 6 or 7 songs that have been bobbing on the shifting tides of my creativity for about a year...in a way, it's good because I can go from one to another if I get stuck...but the more I grow technically, the less likely I am to release 'em coz I realize their inadequacies and more things I can do to improve, so I keep working 'em...oh well, one of these days I gotta let em go, to fly or fall

This does capture that 70s aesthetic well. Interesting that this sort of synthetic symphonies style really faded out by the early 80s or so. Even those who made it, like Jean Michel Jarre, seemed to get enveloped more in that new age/grand production dreck.

As you're aware of my general inclinations, I'm sure you might guess that this is maybe a bit on the clean side for my tastes. I always preferred the rougher, more psychedelic German stuff from that era (Neu!, Faust, Amon Duul, etc). That said I like it a little more each time I listen (listened 3 times now). These tracks were always better for me in conjunction with really raw-sounding tracks. Kind of like side 1 of Neu 75 works best when matched by the harder side 2.

Good to hear your stuff finally, and yes it is true, your stuff is better than Sickle's.

Do you realize how apropos that comment is? The title for the collection of songs I'm working on is Tablets of Destinies, which comes from Assyrian/Babylonian mythology. And some of the other songs I'm working on are titled along similar lines: The Forest of Humbaba, Bull of Heaven.

Thanks! I didn't intentionally start the song with musical reference to KW in mind but in trying to find a sound for the melody, I just kind of fell on one that worked.

Tastes were changing, driven in part by technology. I think digital technology really spoiled a lot of what was happening in this vein in the '70s by making it easier to do more grandeous arrangements. Who could resist the temptaion? And the newly minted "New Age" marketing catch phrase sort of pushed people into a pidgeon hole . . . or at least that's my sound bite oversimplified theory.

I appreciate your listening repeatedly even more, then! I have done much less melodic, much more abstract and experimental, work, but this is the kind of phase I'm in right now. Suddenly having the ability to do pretty much anything I can think of, I find myself wanting to clear the musical mothballs out of my head before diving into Reaktor synth/fx builder land.
