(prompted by a couple of recent 'what synth is it ?' threads and an .mp3 debate down in the raw material forum)

what do you think ???

are we here further ahead theory and technology wise than the mainstream of 'professional' (in the sense of making regular money from it) music production ???

(and is that a good or bad thing ??? )

isolated example ... is it acceptable that a BIG commercial multimedia company uses .mp3 for its roughmixes and collaborations despite all the potential timing and quality issues when other MUCH more accurate (.flac / .ape) formats exist with a minimal (for a company of that size) bandwidth impact ???

not sure where im going with this ... just wanted to ask the question ...

Its a good thing cause the underground is always where the new good stuff comes from.

all i know is that mp3 is for losers. super for itunes and whatnot. but as an 'audio' format it's for losers (it's not like jukeboxes are referred to as 'audio' apps.. they're media playback nothing more). fine. mp3 is for losers.

Being firmly rooted in the under-the-underground myself, I have had so little contact with "professionals" that I have no base of knowledge from which to answer the question. All I know is, I like my music, I like a lot of what I hear here . . . and NO big record company would touch my work with a 10-foot pole.

THAT is probably a good thing, if half of what I hear about the music industry is true.

seriously, rob, but when you guys are so passionate on those formats (which I sadly can´t test here on MacOS9)
why not just make KvR contests .ogg standard for example?

I'm not surprized Disney is so far behind the times--the larger the corportion, the slower the crawl. I work for a multi-national high tech company. In my time we've gone from paper service manuals to CDs to company intranet--all at least five years behind what everyone else was doing. And every step of the way they did it wrong and had to roll out all new proceedures to get it right.

theres no MAC decoders for .ogg / .flac / .ape ???

.flac for MAC - http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html
.ogg for MAC - http://www.vorbis.com/software.psp?pid=4
.ape seems PC only - sorry

id be happy with that TBH (not sure how many others would though) ... but were not saying .mp3 isnt OK for playback since it is and IS industry standard for players ... the concerns were about the potential inaccuracies .mp3 introduces if using it for collaboration etc ...
