What do you use to clean old audio files?

I'm curious about what software you use when you're cleaning up noisy audio. Specifically:

1) Tape hiss/rumble
2) Snap, pops and crackles from old vinyl

I've used a few free programs but they're frankly rather old. Even though they work pretty well, there's bound to have been advances.

I have more problems with restoring old vinyl, usually end up doing most of it manually, which works but is a pain in the sphincter.

I was impressed with the waves plugin X-noise at getting rid of white noise, hiss, rumble etc from old vinyl recordings...
it work much better than i ever expected.

Audition, yeah. I'm familiar with its pre-predicessor Cool Edit 96, which I used up until I got my new DAW. Not sure how much has changed with noise reduction software, though.

well i use the X-noise plugin in cooledit.

Another vote for Audition/CoolEdit.

How about soap and water

Audition here also. I recently transferred audio cassette material to CD for archiving purposes. Once the initial noise print was taken all cleaned up well.

Looks fairly unanimous. Does anyone know if the software's really been improved in Audition compared to the old CoolEdit 96? I've had extremely good results from that old program. Oh, I suppose Audition now has something for snap/crackle/pop removal as well as tape noise--the old program didn't.

Sure does..works great, too, just takes a while to process..

Improved by leaps and bounds over CoolEdit 96 8). If you can find a used copy of the final version of Cool Edit Pro 2 it's the same as the Adobe Audition 1.0. You might save a few $ on eBay.

Halfway through transferring my old vinyl collection to CD. I use WaveLab 5 with its DeClicker plugin, followed by Voxengo ReduNoise and a tiny touch of PSP VintageWarmer to enhance dynamics and maybe restore some sparkle to the upper end.
When I was younger I used to be in doubt. These days I'm not so sure.

Same here, but with Ozone3 instead of PSP VintageWarmer (although I own PSP VW).

If by "enhance" you mean "get rid of" :D

Not that it's a bad thing...
