Logic 5.5.1 and "multi channel" inserts

Hello everybody,

I was using Logic for a LONG time. I did not stop using it even when Apple bought Emagic. I still use it (Version 5.5.1 Windows).
Recently I noticed a very big problem for me. I HOPE that there is a workaround for it as it would make me mad otherwise.

I downloaded the Battery Demo from Native Instruments. Well, it does have 32 outputs but I can't insert it as a VSTi instrument with the "multi channel" menu as Logic just supports up to 16 output channels per instrument!!

I want to buy Kontakt 2. But it also has 32 (fixed?) output channels. What can I do to use at least the first 16 outputs so that i can insert the VSTi with "multi channel" option?

Is there a way to configure the NI plugins or is there a way to hack Logic 5.5.1 Win? Or what can I do to insert Battery 2 or Kontakt 2 with "multi channel" option so that i can route the first 16 channels as I like?

Maybe there is a VST Plugin wrapper that could do that or maybe there is a trick I don't know.

Please let me know. I don't want to move over to Cubase.

Thanx,
Oli

Simple. Get Energy-XT. ;)

Post

Well I had a look at it and yes - it can chain VSTis - BUT... even energy XT can't be inserted as "multi channel" plugin... so still the same problem here :-(

I think you will have to live with it or change your computer or sequencer.

There should be some tool that wraps around a VSTi so that the number of output becomes configurable. But so far I did not find this. This Plugin should itself of course be insertable as "Multi Channel" plugin or otherwise it makes no sense.
I already sent a support request to NI (as I am already a customer there). But I hope that someone is able to help me here.

Doesn't EnergyXT come with its own set of defined outputs, thus kinda "overwriting" Kontakt's 32 outs? Maybe I should just try...
However, NI made the number of outs in Battery 2 user configurable, guess it's just a matter of time that they adress the issue in K2 as well.

just change the outputs in battery VSTi from "whatever" to something under/around 20..and after rebooting logic u should see it in the multi menu. works fine for me anyways. :)
i havent tried kontakt 2 yet, so hard to say if the same trick works in there, but it shold be doable. logic dont support that many channels so just by lowering them, it all should wourk out fine, as said. good luck. :)

K2 so far is fixed to 32 outs.
Logic/PC supports 16 max.

ah..so K2 is fixed? that make things a bit harder i guess..if a simple hex edit dont do it? i'm sure NI will make a update with configurable outs tho..wich solves it all.

Post

Yeah, a hex edit might do the job - just as suggested before Battery 2 was updated.
But then, for some reasons I'll have to stay away from it.

yea well, u dont need to hex Battery anymore (as we already know), and i'm sure K2 will be updated anytime soon. so i guess theres no need to panic. all will eventuelly/hopefully work fine in Logic 5 in the end. :)

damn, too many big and important updates from NI in such short time. i want K2..but reaktor 5 is by far more important for me. hrm.. but i want K2..argh.. :D

Well, you should've gotten Komplete Care then (in case you own Komplete).
Regarding K2 performance in Logic, it comes up with quite some hanging notes, unfortunately (just as quite some 3rd party synths will). Apparently NI isn't doing much to change it anymore - perfectly understandable as it's not really their job.

hehe yea i should.. but i bought battery 2 and reaktor 4 second hand, and well..dont use much more VSTi's actually. besides the Logic internal ones from time to time. but sure.. Komplete Care would be awesome, doubt i'd learn and use it all as deeply as i would like to do tho. its just too much. :P

so K2 dont work that great in Logic? grr..too bad. it really looked cool.. especially with that script editor, i could use some strumming chords etc. hope something similar turns up in reaktor instead. well, i hope K2 never will work in Logic, so i have a reason NOT to get it. :D

btw, i've never had any problems with any VSTi's etc. in Logic. no hanging notes and things like that.. i wonder what synths i havent tried? i usually try every single demo out there just for fun and to keep me updated. :)

Well, basically it's some NI stuff (Absynth and Kontakt mainly, Fm7 and Pro53 don't seem to suffer from the problem, K2 is worse than K1) and a few others that I'm using occasionally (Synth1 - but that one is pointless under Logic anyways, as it won't recall presets properly, FreeAlpha - but it's one of the more crashy things for me).
Others (such a z3ta+ and Pentagon) don't seem to be affected.

Just changed the buffer sizes in Logics driver menu to "small" and it seems to help a bit... but only a bit.
