I'm trying to automate Tonic via midi, but I really don't understand how to do it. Tonic shows up as an VSTi, i e I can send midi to it, but nothing happens no matter what kind of midi I send.

Where in the manual is there a proper explanation how to do this?

What are you trying to automate? Can you play the Tonic from your keyboard? What version of SX?
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

I'm running SX 2.2. As I said Tonic shows up as an possible midi out connection, but when I send midi to the Tonic nothing happens.

I need to know the controllers perhaps!

Must admit I didn't realise you could use midi on the filters. But it would seem so if it can be a destination output. One of the manual documents is all about the plugins isn't it...separate from the Getting Started and Details manuals... I'm sure I remember seeing long lists of midi controller assignments in there.

There's also the generic remote controller thingy - can't you assign midi CCs to VST automation? Check out the manual though...I haven't seen many positive comments about external automation control (don't use it myself).

You still didn't answer the question. Are you saying no notes play? If so all you have to do is click the monitor button on the MIDI track(the little speaker). If you mean you can't control the knobs, then that is a different issue and has a different solution.

heh, I use the GR extensively and love it. I use the 4 sliders on my QS-8 to control all kinds of things (Osc mix, cutoff, reso, etc..) and I use the keyboard to start/stop the transport, select next/prev track, arm/disarm track etc...

See Audio_Effects_and_VSTi.pdf page 43. It depends what mode the envelope follower is in, but basically it wants notes, not controllers.

Here's something that's not in the manual: If you hold down Shift while moving around the GUI, the display shows the MIDI CC assigned to each control.

I'm trying to play notes. What is supposed to happen when I play notes? If Tonic shows up as an midi output connection, I assume something should occur somehow ... :?:

When Tonic's envelope mode is set to 'MIDI' then any incoming MIDI notes will adjust the cutoff frequency in Tonic. Useful when you have a VSTi bassline: throw Tonic on an insert for the VSTi & set it to hi-pass, then switch to the MIDI inserts view on the inspector for the VSTi's MIDI track, and send one of the inserts to Tonic. Now the VSTi MIDI track will not only trigger the VSTi bass sound, but dynamically alter the cutoff frequency for the filter (Tonic) inserted on that same bass sound, as the MIDI notes are used to control/trigger both the VSTi and the filter (Tonic). By using this technique in hi-pass mode (HP), you're dynamically trimming away any freq information below the fundamental in a way that can't be achieved with a fixed cutoff value, and tighter than manually automating the cutoff.

I should point out that Tonic's initial cutoff should be set to 260Hz for some reason in order to correctly track the fundamental (130Hz if you want to track the sub-octave). Boost the resonance to taste in order to emphasize the tracked frequency, and you should also set the mix parameter to 100%.

Using this MIDI tracking mode, you can pull tricks like synthesizing a sub-octave on the fly: send your source track to a group track and instantiate Tonic with a 24db/oct low-pass (LP24), setting the cutoff to 130Hz, pulling the resonance up to between 80-90% and the mix to 100%. Like the earlier example, send the source track's MIDI note information to this instance of Tonic (via a MIDI insert on the source MIDI track) to control the cutoff. This track is now a sub-octave replica of the source, which you can mix together with the source track for real beef in basslines (or mute the source and leave the sub during breakdowns and such).
