Drum loops - better EQ or multiband compressor?

Last night I was using Voxengo's Ess EQ on some drum loops. I boosted the 15k setting to make the high-hat stand out more, but it killed the snare's mid-range in the process. Do I need a better EQ or a multiband compressor? Cakewalk had a tutorial about the latter, but their example was used to tame a snare that was too loud.

Ever tried Nyquist EQ? I find the dragging interface lends itself well to hunting down the right frequency. A parametric EQ will give you more access to the frequencies than a fixed-band graphic EQ.

Have you tried Dynamic EQ?

No, I didn't even know it existed. It looks great...and it's free?! I'll check it out. Thanks!

Heard of it, haven't tried it yet. Thanks for the tip! :)

You can try Blue Cat's Panning Liny EQ: It enables you to manage frequency response separately for Mid / Side of your signal, which is particularely interesting for stereo drums sounds. It's also linear phase, which is pretty cool for drums sounds that include many transients.

Demo is now available here: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=83396 .

Try layering a brighter sounding sample on top. Always try to avoid extreme EQ if you can, particularly digital.
