I remember reading on another audio forum a while back about a VST effect plug that simulated the odd ring-mod/filter sound that gave the Emu SP1200 drum machine/sampler its trademark "grit". I've looked around and I have found squat. I know that the same effect can be achived with any bit reduction program but this just looked cool and it was what I was after. Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about or where it could be obtained from? I seem to recall that it MAY have been a SynthEdit plugin but I cant be sure. Thanks in advance.
Yeah well...I've never heard of you either and I have never once paid for any piece of software. Suckers...

You're likely thinking of a bit crusher to lower the quality of the samples.

There's lotsa free ones!

Yeah...thats what this plug was but the GUI resembled that of the SP1200 and if memory serves me right it did not have any tweakable perameters except for wet/dry. I can get the same sound from LoFi Plus, +decimate, or Bit-Crusher but I just wanted to see if anyone had ever heard of this or had this and possibly direct me to it.

Part of the grit comes from the opamps used in the 1200 too, as well as the funky pitch-shifting you can do with the samples.

which opamps did they use?

yeah a bit crusher should work, with some additional eq/filtering since with plugin bitcrushers u get too much high end

I made a plug especially for that but i cant compare it to the sp 1200, its called the Odaku effect and its listed here on kvr if you want to look at the specs. The page is down so if you want it, let me know and I'll email it to you.

I'd be really interested to check it out Appartition.

a quick way to do this digitall is bump down your samples to 8 bit then equalize

use the mda degrade plugin- it can do a good imitation. I suspect that Project 5-2 may be able to simulate it with a new plugin called alias factor
