I second the GAC. I recently purchased the express bundle from KJaerhaus which is the GAC and the GPP. A great combo to have and a great dev to support.

For free ones, I like endorphin as well as the MDA one.
For not-free, I've had some very good luck with the Sonitus one.

If you get the $12 FreEQ Boy and like the sound (and isolation) of using clean precise steep slopes as crossovers (low pass, band pass, hipass) then you have a tool that makes every single band compressor a multi-band. Assuming the host does PDC then even the compressors with latency can be used that way.
Break a stereo drum kit up into seperate bass, mids, treble tracks to manipulate the kick thump, snare crack, hihat tik with multiband compression. Break a bass guitar up into sub-bass and bass components and control that with multiband. You generally won't find a multi-band compressor with a steep enough crossover that can isolate the 1st few octaves from each other - if you like/need that amount of control.
You can even split up full mixes that way and rebalance to taste.
Now all the free single-band compressors and limiters are multi-band.
I'm working the very versatile Kjaerhus GAC-1 also but it ain't free. I'd also mention that using FreEQ Boy and Voxengo Elephant makes for a very nice (super transparent) multiband limiter that can go on tracks and full mixes.

Well, Endorphin has no user-defineable bands. Of course that still doesn't disqualify it - it's just not as flexible as others. I love it a LOT for drums though.
Hm, I don't remember (wish I would, I'd like to give a a testdrive), but someone a while ago released a free MB compressor, stereo enhancer, exciter and so on in one handy little plugin, which was supposed to sound great. Was it Arguru? Anybody remembers?
It had a relatively large UI for the 4 components coming with it...

hummm well I have tried to use endorphin but I don't really get how to use it for drums etc, I never really found much amazing stuff with it. Can someone show me why it's so good?

it's not one I've tried but I am finally grasping the concept of compressors so I'll give this one a spin. I'll let you know if it's any good (although given some of the comments here from people that know way more than me I think it's safe to assume it is)

I found that because Endorphin isn't set up like most compressors, I had to mess with the presets a bit until I figured out how much you could push it and how loud to send your instruments into it. It is definitely a "character" compressor in that it does a fair bit fo coloration, which is really neat.
Most often though, I find myself using the Buzzroom Grancomp 3. I really like the meters and the output limiter.

I've never used the presets in endorphin. I usually start by pulling up comp hi and low to somewhere between 50-70, adjust the input gain / levels of the two bands so I don't get any saturation and then start tweaking to suite the current song.

Kylen, I've never understood exactly how this works. Do you know of any step by step tutorials on this subject? Or if it's a simple enough concept, can you provide a step by step?kylen wrote:If you get the $12 FreEQ Boy and like the sound (and isolation) of using clean precise steep slopes as crossovers (low pass, band pass, hipass) then you have a tool that makes every single band compressor a multi-band.
