How to map CCs for VST control in Cubase?

Can someone explain to me what hoops I have to jump through to map knobs and faders on my Radium61 to VST controls?

In FL Studio you can just use "Link to Controller". A great feature. In Live you can unfold the VST parameters, although it's not always clear how they correspond to the GUI controls. But in Cubase I really can't figure it out at all and I've done some searching.

Is there some way to find out which CCs a VST is using? Even if I could do that, I'm still not clear on how to program Cubase SX to recognize my controller knobs and faders.

Thanks,

Hi, the easiest way is to use the generic remote feature of Cubase SX. It's explained in the manual, but essentially if you go to Device Setup at the bottom of the Devices menu, click on the + sign and choose generic remote, you will end up with a screen displaying at the top the controllers being sent out by your keyboard (it has a learn function as well, so you don't need to make any specific setting on the keyboard)which in the botom half of the screen can be assigned to just about any control in the programme. If you make sure you have the particular VST you want to control in the Instrument Rack then it will appear as a controllable destination. I've just got a BCR2000, and am delving around in this amazing feature. Good luck, and hope this was some help!

You don't need to know the CC. In the Generic Remote on the top window, click one of the lines and rename it to a function you want to control. Now hit the button/key you want to control it with on you keyboard. Then click the learn button. The control number should now be there.

Ok, Now find the name you typed in the bottom window. You need to go down everyone dropdown to assign it to the correct control.

Also, doesn't M-Audio have a template for this for download?
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

Thanks for the responses but I am still not clear on this so let me try an example to clarify my question.

I load up a single instrument. I chose swarplug because it only has a preset and 3 knobs on it, which read "Gain", "Pan", and "P.B.R.". I then go into Device Setup and look at Generic Remote.

Now, my Radium61 has only 8 knobs and 8 faders. I look at the Cubase Generic Remote area and I see, in the top, rows for faders 1-16, pan 1-16, mute 1-16, send1 1-16 and send 2 1-16. The bottom is similar except that there is one instance of "SwarPl" for each of the types (fader, pan, mute, etc.).

This all looks to me like maybe I can control the mixer volume, pan, etc. from my Radium61 but I am trying to control the GUI components (the three knobs, plus the preset).

Does that make more sense? What am I missing?

By the way I guess I should mention I also have a Roland A-37 connected at the same time, but since that has no knobs or faders I am assuming that it does not make a difference.

Thanks,

Mapping your controller CC,s to your vst parameters is the worst nightmare in Cubase.

It does not work, practically, because the setup is global and permanent, and between songs you change vst and all, so if you forget saving your mappings with each song, all your assignments will be gone. You would have to load each one separatly when you load a new song for it to work also.

And if it was no enough, if you add tracks in your project, it can sometime offset the assignments you made earlier in that same project... so you have to re-do those as your project is modified.

Results, all your assignments are contantly messed up, and if you forgot to save them apart from saving your song they are gone for ever. When you comeback to a song after a few months, you will have to guess witch parameters was map to what.

I stopped using Cubase mostly for that fact, I was using SX2 but heard that in SX3 that had not changed much.

What did you switch to then? Maybe I need to stick to FL Studio and/or Live for mapping my Radium61...?

This is how i do it in cubase and i find it very effective

each page of settings is saved as one preset in a large bank of midi assignmnets - part of each preset is the buttons to move between presets - this means you have one giant bank of midi to vst assignments - and you scroll between them -

the one bank is then used in all my songs

as for your questions about how to actually set controllers up- the upper window contains the info about what controller controls what

all the names and all that are for some imaginary set up and are quite irrelevant -you can delete them or rename tham to your hearts content

choose the first one - press learn - wiggle the control you want to use and it's cc or nrpn should appear in that area

now in the lower window choose the lane with the same name - assign that to the parameter you want - if it is a vst you must have the vst in the project

now wiggle one and the other moves - especially fab if you have feedback and you can use the mouse to move yer knobs

just for gawds sake save your assignments

but the last assignemnt loads as a default - so if you do the way i suggested you only have to save it once.
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

ericj23 I tried to do what you said. I loaded EVP-73 as a VST and "Learn"ed the first knob on my Radium61. The problem is down below I can see nothing that corresponds to the VST's controls. Actually what happened for me is that I got the first knob to control the volume of the VST. What I'm trying to do though is control the various other VST parameters. For EVP-73, for example, these are "decay", "release", "bell", "damper", etc.
