hi,

is there a (free) software that tries to convert a single clean guitar track to midi?

If you mean polyphonic audio to midi conversion that's a very dificult task ATM. I think I 've seen some program claiming such capabilities but I think it was not matured yet. Don't remember its name right now but I don't think you're missing something special. There are some other mono "audio to midi converters" (google the last quote) but I was not satisfied with any of them.

amazing midi (freeware, copyright arakisoftware). Sorry, no link. Haven't tried it, either, but it says it can do what you want.
If you can't beat your computer at chess, try kick-boxing.

I use TS-Audio to MIDI sometimes, there is a demo you can try at http://www.audioto.com/.

It can't do everything, but I kind of like it anyway.

If you want proper results from polyphonic material there's no way but to get a hardware converter along with some Roland GK pickup (or a bridge replacement with a build in one).

I actually agree with Sascha Franck in this. But the software can give you some possibilities with already recorded material. And also it wont cost you much. But it's not going to do everything you would want, that's for sure. And in a live situation, well I wouldn't want to do that with software.

If such a thing were possible, I would probably be out of a job.. ;)

Tell him to get a used GK II pickup and a used GI 10. I paid around 400 german marks for that combination way back new. There's a GI-10 including a GK 2 pickup for 99 on ebay right now (3 days to go).
