I'm currenty using Live in the same fashion as the guy in the P5 video. I would say at this point Ableton have the right to steal the arpegiattor, Track-Save and piano roll editing features. These are just some small things that would put the icing on Live and make these two about the same program.

Except that Live doesn't have a big ol 'restart audio engine' button you need to press every two minutes :hihi:

a rep from Cakewalk posted a clarification on the Project 5 forum that P5 v2 will not be able to incorporate live recording 'on the fly' as implied in the video.
after review he said everything else in the video was accurate.

so Live fans will still have that going for them, as I understand that Live can do that sort of thing for evolving live performance mixed against looped clips and incorporating recorded clips as the night progresses.

since P5 will be a Rewire host there wouldn't be much point in trying to out Live Live and out Reason Reason when they can all work together -- each with their own particular feature sets and strengths.

shit shit shit

omg Ableton has to come with it

I love competition. 8)
All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

yeah, it's interesting how it brings out the best in products and the worst in people

They've actually been quite good and implementing numerous new features in each of their updates... unlike the Propellerheads!

Is it just me or is Rewire kind of a hassle. I have to start up separate programs, each in the right order, make sure I save projects in both programs consistently and keep them in sync etc.

Not a *huge* deal, but I'd definitely prefer to keep everything in one host.

Pretty surprising that P5 V2 won't record live audio after all, but since I'm interested in it purely as a VST host (as I suspect a lot of others are), it's not a big deal for me.

What no one is asking and no one is answering is how good the CPU usage is on Project 5 V.2. As I understand from a lot of posts, that's one of the biggest issues with Live as a host, and it's supposedly tied to the gapless audio engine. How did Project 5 get around this problem. Another issue is that Live's lack of PDC is due to the gapless engine. Is there PDC in Project 5? Can it be a real host, or is it just a performance tool?

I'm curious about this too, but if P5 has a decent freeze function (and if it's similar to Sonar's it should be quite good), this won't be as much of an issue as it is for Live.

looked really pretty sweet - but does it have pdc or not -

I apprecaite it won't ahve live but for actual playback of the files in a kinda daw sort of way that would be pretty essential to me

guess im waiting too
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Eventhough the live performances capabilities of P5 are quite obvious, I mostly see it as a 'no bs' compositionnal tool. With the user friendly kinda interface, i think it's gonna be a pleasure to deal with, as one will be able to focus on making music irather than loading, switching views, navigate etc...
Cubase has become a real inspiration killer to me lately, and p5 might well be what i'm looking : a software that will make me enjoy making music...

i hope it's gonna hold its promises.

Just for clarification, P5 WILL record live audio you just can't grab it in real time and use it immediately in the groove matrix without stopping first since the audio won't "appear" till you stop.

Those that can, do. Those that can't, argue about it on k-v-r

I'm finding that the Session View/Groove Matrix way of composing is way more conducive to getting ideas going than the traditional linear approach. Once you shift into the arrange view with Live things start to get more painful but it can't be beat for getting ideas out.

If P5 can bridge the gap it could be a killer host. Let's hope. Looks good on paper so far and having RGC in their arsenal can't hurt a bit. It sounds like it will absolutely smoke Live (and Reason IMO) in terms of built-in instruments.

Anyone thinks this could easily be corrected by patching the software? If so let's just hope it won't take ages... Cause it's a (small) disappointment to me actually.

The Fx and Inst. freeze makes a huge differemce with Live! to me...
And yes, the synths and other built in instruments do seem awesome !
