What you may want in the very first place is a proper drumsampler.
Most likely the best choices right now:
- FXpansion DR-008
- Linplug RMIV
- Native Instruments Battery 2
The DR-008 is currently selling at an absolutely amazing price ($100 I think).
The advance of using the DR-008 might be that, apart from it being a great drum sampler, it's also coming with some very good sounding, flexible, yet low on your CPU synthdrum modules.
And as soon as you register, you'll get access to almost 3GB of downloadable patches, some of them being just kickass.
There's some freebies loading samples around as well, have a look for "Twitch" (I think that's the name) by Majken.
Ah, found the page:
http://www.majken.se/vst/index.asp?Page=twitch.asp
If you are serious about your stuff (and you will have to be as soon as it comes to backups and the likes) you may want something more professional though. As said, you can't go wrong with DR-008 IMO.
FWIW, all the commercial machines mentioned allow for sample preview in context. This means, you just playback your sequence and exchange, say, kicks on the fly, by simply scrolling through your sample directories. Once you're happy you load them. I couldn't live without that any longer.
Anyways, if you don't plan on buying something but go the freebie route for now, you will also need some proper sounding samples.
http://meanbeat.cjb.net/ is a very good place to get a great roundup of all sorts of drum samples! Don't be worried in case the site goes down after a while, there's a more or less strict transfer limit - so just try again until you've got everything (right now the downloads seem to be working fine, sou you better hurry up).
Then there's the big sample site list (collected by our brave Mr. Pantsdown) here:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 72&start=0
That should keep you busy for a while if you are after some free drum samples. I recommend checking the meanbeat site though because you get about everything nicely structured from one single page.

thanks really appreciate the help, as computer music is such a massive topic, swamped with plug ins ,vst and sample cds, so much choice,
i might have to demo a few drum modules before parting with cash, want to be comfprtable with one before buying, is there one that you can eq your hits seperatly instead of using the eq on a sequencer ?
i had read good revies for DR-008 and Battery,
definatly need some good samples to start with and then choose a drum module and get to know it inside out i think. thanks for the links ill check them out over the weekend and try to get some free sounds etc
unless you know of any good sample cds,i always check ebay for cheap software etc theres always sample cds etc on there.
i just really want to get comfortable with some vst and my sequencer etc and get stuck into to getting some music done that has good quality of souund,
keep looking for house music tutorials on drum comression ,bass, eq etc
want to learn as much as possible
thanks mark

Maybe you will like them.
Here are some freebies from those packs.

as im sure your kicks dont want any reverb on them ?

you might want to check out some of the samples at www.modernbeats.com
it's mainly geared towards hip-hop production, but the sounds could easily be used for house. the kicks especially are some of the hardest hitting samples i've come across.

Wow, nice Flash music, very nice beat. Excellent. (talking about modernbeat).
Anyway, its content is a shame for the hip hop producer who use it. But for the begginers, or movie score, etc... Seems excellent

some good tips here, i just need a quality sample cd for drums, might have to invest in dance mega drums as the sample cs i have like funky house producer and a few others have alot of hiss behind the one shot drum hits, also alot are quite harsh and metalic sounding i want a large collection of quality subtle hits i can Eq and process
so i guess dance mega or Bob claremont is the way to go
thanks Mark

From the dedicated libraries, Ueberschall's House musique and House essentials are about the only ones that contain decent single hits... too bad they're filled with useless loops (useless meaning that they contain too much stuff going on and too little variety to be of any real use) - albeit House musique is in construction kit format, which has its advantages...
And it's an entirely different thing whether they cater for the kind of house you want to do, since both libraries are directed towards a specific, limited part of the genre.
Going with Dance Megadrums I is a really good choice if you're willing to go the extra mile and do all the necessary processing each time. That's where the beauty of the dedicated libraries is, you're starting with something closer to the goal.

JMH

yes i see what you mean about sample cds directed towards a certain style, i work on funky soulful house projects
i have house musique, House essentials, Funky house producer, disco deluxe and many more
and i have to say i think they are crap, ive paid £60 per cd and to be honest i think its a rip off when samples havent even been recorded with much care or quality, if the source sample has hiss in the background you dont stand much chance of making a good break right from the start.
ive been djing soulful vocal house for 8 years
and your better off sampling vinyl or cd and slicing the beats to create your own beats.
ive noticed loopmasters and now bringing out a soulful house producer sample cd
the drums on my sample cds seem very harsh, metalic and of poor qulaity in alot of cases.
so i would rather use a standard collection of hits and process to my taste, it seems a waste of my cash buying house sample cds.
thanks mark
