i've decided to teamup with two producer's from russia to form a trance project.

We have been getting some commercial intrest with our recent moby remix but we didn't master the track correctly. I am intrested in finding out more about what's the best effect's and where to use them are in the actual "mixing" stage, rather than our music becoming 'mush' in the final version. We have a professional sound, but it's still no where near as good as the like's of Above&Beyound or similar trance act's.

I purchased the new Computer Music magazine which had an 8 page spread on 'mixing' and what filter's to use on what instrument's to give the correct headroom (or enough to work with). It give me some rough guide's but nothing that was really perfectly suitable for our work.

I was looking into purchasing UAD-1 Plugins specifically for mixing, i noticed Thrillseekers/Above&Byeound use these exclusively, but it's where to apply the correct effect's that's confusing me.

I need to find out as much information on what's the best effects to use for each section of mixing, mastering, specifically how to handle the correct effect usuage specifically for euphoric/uplifting style trance with big synth lines :) big-room stuff mainly...

What's the best book's/tutorials to use to learn as quick as possible about this area? I have full understanding of synth programming and host usuage.

We are using FLStudio 5.2 and also curious to know if it would be possible to simply use the included effects plugins (specifcally the EQ/Fiters) for commercial grade trance music?

We have been using TC Work's for compression, reverb, delay, phaser at present.

Thank's in advance! :)

Infact maybe it would be useful for someone to post a flstudio project with proper "mixing" (ready for mastering) we could study how they handle everything...

Surely their must be other trance producer's (Arksun is one that come's to mind...)

No book or article can learn you all the tricks of this trade, it only can give you some inspiration. If you and a couple of other people think your setup sounds great, it simply IS great.

Experimentation is the key factor in finding a great sound of your own. Get your hands dirty, do it a lot. Start from scratch and try it again but slightly different, and see weather it works better or not.

Concerning the UAD1: its not the plugins, although having good gear does help! I hear great things about the UAD1 unit, but I also hear great things about VST plugins. At the end it does not matter..

I play guitar and like Carlos Santana. Should I buy the same guitar as he has? Not nescessarily... I do not have his hands, so regardless the gear I will sound different.

We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. :borg:

go and get a pro-mastering if you have big plans and the sound is well done!
nowadays its not too expensive to have your sound mastered and its really worth it if you want good quality press and that your sound comes well in broadcast, hifi, portable players etc!!!!!

I think pro-mastering will be something for the future, while it's easy to say that mastering can fix alot, it can't help bad mixing.

While i would be happy to hand over our project work for someone to mix/master, i have yet to find a company which will specifically study the flstudio project and fix the mixing. It's an artform, and i am going to try my best and learn how to mix correctly...

With that said, any book's/links would be good :)

Hi,

Is there somewhere I can hear this track or something that you've done? I can't tell you what's wrong without hearing it. I'm familiar with Above & Beyond and that whole sound, as I do similar stuff. If you can send a link, that'd be great. Or just PM me on here, and we can talk. I use Cubase for synths and MIDI (and the mix), but I do drums in FL Studio, so I'm familiar with it.

I look forward to hearing from you.
