Alternative Rock / Punk

Is it possible to make alternative / punk music using samples (and possibly vst instruments/effects) only? If so, what would I need?

I guess BFD or DFHS would do for drums.

But what about the rest?

I've been playing around a little with the Kontakt 2 E-Guitar and the Guitar Rig demo for the lead but I can't quite make it sound anything like what I'm after. Especially can't get the "up-and-down" guitar sound you hear in alternative rock a lot.

Would like to be able to make songs like Green Day, Sum 41, Third Eye Blind, Sugarcult, Blink 182 etc.

Any suggestions are welcome.
