Are there any tips for getting a Radio Friendly mix. What are some of the adjustments that can be made? Any certain presets? Anything that you guys know of that gives tips for strickly L3?

Post

Radio friendly mix? At K-14 [avg -14db to -10db] or K-12 [avg -12 to -8db] at the most. In other words, don't crank it up too much.

any sites speaking about tip for the waves L3?

It's a great plugin! Watch your transients before sending it off to the L3 (or applying the L3 over your master). That way you can push it harder through the L3 without serious grabing. Also, tweaking the band compression in the multi is better/more comprehensive than jst 'presetting' the ultra IMO.

If you're too cute (threshold) through the L3 you won't be loud enough to obtain your radio friendly mix...

thanks for the reply but do any of you know any sites that deal with L3....I've checked the waves site...seen nothing!

Listen to your mix also on a really crappy soundsystem (your sister's?). Radiofriendly means it also has to sound 'reasonable' on crappy systems. A studio where i worked had three different types of speakers: Very expensive studio-monitors, average hifi-speakers and a pair of carstereo-speakers. The final mix should sound good on all three.

How about reading the docmentation that comes with it? Lots of good information there.

use the Multi not the Ultra ;)

my mastering experience is as follows:

a. get (the peaks of) your mix (envelope the shit out of that shit in terms) between -12 db (at the quietest parts of the song) and 0 db.

b. get any of the worst peaks out of the way with a limiter (if you properly did a., this is not needed).

c. run your mix through a good compressor (i master with the t-racks compressor, but a lot of people hate it. i enjoy the warmth it adds). set between 2:1 for a "loud" song and 3:1 for a soft song, fast attack, relatively slow release usually works best for me.

d. the L3 really can be a 'magic wand' - i've only used it and i don't own it, so my time with is has been a little limited. i prefer the multimaxizer to the ultra because it fills things out spectrally and you get that more 'alive' sound with it. start with the 'hi res cd master' setting it comes with. if you find you are adding more than 6db of gain or attenuating more than 3.5db, go back and revisit your mix or compression settings.

how would you guys compare L3 to L2.
i can't afford to upgrade and i WOULD have to pay to get v.5 of my platinum bundle. i love L2 and the auto-release, plus the built in IDR is great, but i could get by with the Free L1 clone "W1".

is L3 THAT much better than L2 ?

*hint hint* Give BuzMaxi3 a try ;)

I experimented with the demo L3 and did not like the results that I ended up getting. The final test mix always sounded better with the L2. I dont have alot of experience using plugins so I may have been using the L3 wrong but overall I always end up using Voxengo Elephant and the EL3 mode the most here now as it sounds as good as the Waves L2 in my opinion.

IMHO in the EL-3 mode, Elephant tramples Waves L1,L2 and L3
