I would say get a smaller hi quality desk maybe, I used to have a TAC Scorpion that took 2 people to pick up. Sod that.

WTF! Like I said, I don't want anything to do with a mixer that has a "sound". I want it to be totally transparent and I'm sure that is the goal of mixer manufacturers the world over. if you think it has a "sound", I think you're kidding yourself.MickGael wrote:Even so, there is nothing in the world that sounds quite like it.
Precisely what I have done by creating everything inside the computer. By recording my vocals directly into the computer, I cut out an intermediate stage which is guaranteed to add noise. Regardless of the spec's of any preamp, leads, plugs, etc all contribute.kilroy wrote:I humbly submit therefore, that a much better solution to lower noise in audio recordings is to simply eliminate the rooms in which they are recorded.

The EQ in ORION is at least as good as any EQ I have used in any studio, much less any mixer I could afford to buy myself.

Bones you are funny...the eq in orion is harsh and nasty digital affair. In fact the only digital eq I use now are the Tritone eq's... amazing eq's for $199 I allways used the UAD-1 Cambridge up until now.
There is no way a digital progs mixer like Orion will ever sound as nice as seperate outputs going into a good analog desk. If you went to a mastering place and asked them to use the eq in Orion rather than there analog eq's they would look at you funny thinking it was a joke.

I would rather have a slightly less sound to noise ratio with colour and character than a cold digital direct input any day.

Really bones - you are hilarious. Stop saying ORION is better than cubase/logic/samp/sonar, ORION's eq is better than API/NEVE/SSL, ORION is better than Budha/God/Atheism.BONES wrote:The EQ in ORION is at least as good as any EQ I have used in any studio, much less any mixer I could afford to buy myself.
It removes any credibility you have. As for the eliminating noise I totally support that, and consider vsts the next best thing since sliced bread.
However the eq in Orion although very capable and workable, is under no circumstances as good as even "cheaper" console eq's unless you define screechy and digital harsh as nice. Now harmonieq is digital but in a goooooooooood way , as is the Weiss.

Well, you were talking about noise, as well, my friend. The API I tracked on was whisper quiet.BONES wrote:WTF! Like I said, I don't want anything to do with a mixer that has a "sound". Want world-class, transparent sound? Then try the GML 9500 Mastering EQ:

Astonishing. I've mastered using this box, and yes: the difference is night and day. And at a list price of $11,000 US it had damned well better!
Honestly, until you have the chance to use this level of gear it's hard to appreciate how great it really is....

I think BONES' crucial phrase was "that I can afford". Certainly, there are better and cheaper Eqs I'd prefer to use within s/w than those on most budget desks. But you start going to the top end of budget desks even, and most Eqs are sweeter than certainly Orion's. Not as clean, for sure, but I prefer sweet character Eqs than flat boring digital ones most of the time. And Orion wouldn't be what I'd call classy Eqs by a loooooooooooooooooong way.
I tend to agree with The Skeletal One on noise specs though - I prefer good noise specs on a desk rather than "character"; at least for the line inputs. But he obviously hasn't heard a mix going through a quality desk - I find the difference quite obvious - and that's without spending any money on them, so I haven't "convinced" myself. Used to get occasional access to a guy who had a very old SSL, and I couldn't characterise it, but it sounded far lusher than anything I could do with my s/w or old analogue desks. (Mind you, he put his Moog C3 modular through it, so it was going to sound better than any of my crap
) but then Bones'll probably tell me that Wasp can do anything that a C3 can do

I had to think about him when I was doing some programing in the minimonsta this weekend.. I could almost hear him.. 'you can easily get that sound in wasp too..'

Btw, Lynne's Ask3D forum is a FANTASTIC resource. Lots of very experienced people with lots of hands-on experience with gear that you don't often get to play with. Posters are very generous with their time. Can't recommend it enough....
