I bought this a few weeks ago and finally got around to trying it. I use FLStudio and I noticed that there is a noticeable delay created with Space Boy. I guess this is common knowledge that has been discussed before? And does anyone know of a workaround?

Thanks in advance.

Space Boy has noticeable latency due to the complexity of the job that it does. No workaround without sacrificing quality. I can't presume to speak for Paul, but I've always been under the impression that he's a master to quality first and foremost, so I don't imagine there will be a no-latency version coming out anytime soon.

Space Boy is very very useful for mixing down, so I suggest using it in a mix. If you want quick frequency ducking, there are other plug-ins and solutions that will work differently.

Also, I have to admit I haven't used the Wormholes feature much, but it seems to me that if you assign wormholes instead of doing the processing in realtime, you will get similar (though stationary) results, and I can only guess (not having tried it) that the latency will be reduced dramatically.

Does FL Studio have delay compensation? The other thing you will need to do is make sure you have manually compensated for this delay if not.

Does FL have plug-in delay compensation?

If not, then on the About page of Space Boy is displayed the latency in milliseconds (ms). This is the latency that would occur if the host does not support PDC.

For a 44.1 kHz host it will say 92.8 ms and for a 48 kHz host 85.3 ms. In any case it is equal to 4096 samples.

Group all the FX channels not using Space Boy to a single FX-channel and then use something like SampleSlide from AnalogX (www.analogx.com) on that channel to offset for the latency.

This is what I do when I want to use SIR in my projects (which has a latency of 8196 samples, very noticable).

Good tip, thanks...I'll give that a go.

Suppose that, in the same project, you are using Space Boy and SIR (another plug with a delay). Both have delays, but both delays are different...how would you handle that?

Depends if you use them in series or parallel. In parallel you need to delay all tracks by at least the longest delay. Those with Space Boy will need an additional delay added (the difference between Space Boy and Convo Boy...sorry I meant SIR)

Either way, you could use a couple of the freely available sample/plug-in delay compensation utilities from Voxengo.

Or do I need to make one as well?

By the way, why are you still using SIR and not Convo Boy?

Are you offering? I think it would be very convenient.

Actually I don't even use SIR :) I was just curious how you would go about using these delay compensator plugs if you have multiple plugs with different delays.

So in other words...

say I have 5 tracks, and I'm using Convo Boy (w/ 8196 latency) on track 1...I have to put delays of 8196 on tracks 2-5, correct? And if track 2 uses Space boy, then I have to put an additional delay on track 2 of 4100. Is that right?

But...if I have Convo Boy and Space Boy on the same track, then I need to delay all other tracks by 8196, i.e. longest delay?

I'm just trying to get my head around this stuff :)

Almost.

Let's say Convo Boy is set to a latency of 8192 and Space Boy is set to 4096. And assuming insert effects for these examples:

Scenario 1:

5 tracks in total with Convo Boy on track 1. You need to add a 8192 sample delay to tracks 2-5.

Scenario 2:

5 tracks in total with Convo Boy on track 1 and Space Boy on tracks 2 and 3. You need to add a 4096 sample delay to tracks 2 and 3 and a 8192 sample delay to tracks 4 and 5.

Scenario 3:

5 tracks in total with Convo Boy followed by Space Boy on track 1 and another Space Boy on track 2. You need to add a 8192 sample delay to track 2 (BEFORE Space Boy) and a 8192 + 4096 = 12288 sample delay to tracks 3-5.

Scenario 4:

5 tracks in total with Space Boy followed by Convo Boy on track 1 and another Space Boy on track 2. You need to add a 8192 sample delay to track 2 (AFTER Space Boy) and a 8192 + 4096 = 12288 sample delay to tracks 3-5.

Because the order of the serial plug-ins can be important, it is handy to have a plug which can introduce a variable sample delay. This way, you can introduce a delay before or after a particular plug-in.

Hope this makes sense.
