Beck kicks ass- he has been quietly making consistently strong albums for a good 11 years or so now. The production/writing on Nicotine and Gravy(from midnight vultures) are on par or better than just about anyone out there. His new album is pretty good too, so everyone run out and get Guero...

hey S_A_P, did you see him last time he came with the Flaming Lips?

It was a friggin great show.

I have yet to hear the new cd

No I was unable to attend that show, and I have been trying to forget that ever since- thanks for reminding me :x :tantrum: :tantrum: :bang: :x :hihi: j/k

seriously though, I was gonna go to the wilco show this week and forgot to buy tix until yesterday, and they are friggin sold out :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

The new album is pretty good, it is alot like odaley, and you can hear the dust bros. production influence. I would say that about 5-6 songs are really good, and the rest is filler to pretty good. Its not his best work, and I would rank it behind Mid nite vultures and Sea change, but it is better than odaley, mutations and mellow gold.

Guero is great, to me Midnight Vultures is probably his weakest album other than the Nicotene & Gravy track (stilll a good album though). My fav still is Mutations.

I felt guero more tunes-oriented than MV or Odelay, both my favs for very different reasons.
anyway cool..

Nicotene and gravy is an awe inspiring track- incredible layering and melding of sounds and styles. I think that MV is alittle self indulgent, but for the most part he pulls it off.

Not to mention hollywood freaks is a great parody of materialistic and money grubbing hip hop...

the first time Beck came to houston he played at this tinnie-winnie club/bar that was no bigger than a typical coffee shop called "goat's head soup"

I went to goats head soup back in '94. I was 17 at the time and the owner carded us. I told him we didnt have ID, and started to walk away. The owner then said "aww fuckit, I need the money, come on in" so we got to see a local band called "Limp Johnson". A few weeks later, I saw the news where the owner had commited arson on the club to get the insurance money for it, and was caught and arrested.

hey S_A_P, if you are not doing anything on June 11th you should go out to Mary Janes. my band (8track charade) is playing with Of Montreal. Not sure if you are familiar with them but they are a pretty huge indy band.

anyway, you might like what we are doing. Our singer plays a wurly (just like you ;-)) ....there is also a trumpet player....blah blah blah....six members total. very beatles-floyd-elliot smith-ish. i use a laptop and vsti's. might be cool if you are interested.

Looks like a saturday? Sounds good- I will mark my calendar. 8) I would like to see more bands in that style around here. does yer band have a mailing list?

speaking of beatles- you gonna go see macca in november? I figure its the last time he'll come around, so I may as well see 1/4 of the beatles playing some of his songs...

unfortuntely, IMO the Houston music scene is terrible at best. There are many talented players into good music but it doesn't seem that they are forming bands. you either see one good member in a bad band or you meet talented guys that just compose their own stuff at home. i have been playing in the scene off-and-on since about 92 and it has always been that way. seemed that popular bands around here have always been the "party band"

on another note....we are currently signing a recording contract with Lucid Records out of New York. The owner of the label was in that indy band "Braid" ...you might be familiar with them if you were into the whole Jimmy Eat World - Sunny Day Real Estate scene. anyway, we are signing a 1 EP & 1 full legnth contract and will hopefully be going into the studio as early as June. There is some old 8track charade info & music if you look it up on www.myspace.com. this was before I joined...and this was also a different guitar player and drummer. at least you could get an idea.
