What's up with you? I give you the exact answer of what they used at the time, but you don't want to track down the sounds? There is no such thing as a Chicago circa 1982 "preset", but I'm sure if you find some samples that match up with I've described, along with the appropriate effect, you'll have the sound you're looking for. Didn't like the answer the first time? The answer is STILL acoustic drums/gated reverb/heavy compression & Simmons toms. I'll even give you a hint on the Simmons toms - they have them on Hollow Sun.

dimitar, unfortunately tk matteson is correct. basically, the combination of analog tape, compression and gated reverb will get you that 70s and 80s drum sound...

tk is dead on. Use the most acoustic drum samples you can find. Compress it at an extremely ration with a low threshold. Then apply a gated reverb. The trick then is to apply a second, very mild reverb across the drum bus...this is the distinction between Chicago-style 80s drums and 80s-style Phil Collins drums.
